  12. 30 DAYS PRIOR12 Aug 2001 • Zacarias Moussaoui arrives in Minnesota to attend flight training school. • On this date there are 70 “Full Field Investigations” related to Bin Laden. • Not one of them involves anyone who would be involved in the attacks.

  13. 29 DAYS PRIOR13 AUG 2001 • Mohamed Atta and two other hijack pilots fly to Las Vegas for an apparent planning meeting. • Marwan al-Shehhi buys two black 4” pocket knives. FAA allows this at this time. • Moussaoui starts his flight training but makes a comment that he wants to learn how to fly a 747 but does not intend to get his license

  14. 28 DAYS PRIOR14 Aug 2001 • Mohamed Atta, Nawaf al-Hamzi, and Hani Hanjour all leave from Las Vegas (planning session) • 2 Hijackers withdraw $2000.00 from ATM in Florida • Condoleeza Rice who is the National Security Advisor, fails to take action on warnings from counter-terrorism officials.

  15. 27 DAYS PRIOR15 Aug 2001 • FBI Opens an “intelligence Investigation” on Moussaoui. • The flight school he is attending reports that he maybe a terrorist. • CIA Counter-Terrorism Chief, Chris Black tells the DoD Convention, “We are going to be struck soon, many Americans are going to die, and it could be in the U.S.” • Marwan al-Shehhi buys a gym membership for 1 week in Florida

  16. 26 DAYS PRIOR16 AUG 2001 • The group of Hijackers that will hijack American Airlines Flight 77 check in to their hotel in Laurel, Maryland. (close to the NSA) • Hani Hanjour will take 1.3 hour of flight training at an Airport in Maryland • Hanjour will be the Hijack pilot for American Airlines Flight 77 • Moussaoui is arrested for Immigration charges. FBI is very concerned as to why he wants to become trained on the 747

  17. 25 DAYS PRIOR17 aug 2001 • Ziad Jarrah has his “check ride” in his flight school training located in Florida. • Jarrah will be the hijack pilot for United Airlines Flight 93 • Moussaoui is ordered to be deported. • FBI agents are attempting to get a search warrant for his computer

  18. 24 DAYS PRIOR18 AUG 2001 • FBI is requesting evidence from a legal attach in Paris. • Information will assist in obtain a search warrant for Moussaoui • Minnesota FBI agent Harry Samit sends a memo to Washington FBI Headquarters advising that Moussaoui was “conspiring to commit a terrorist act.” • Memo goes UNREAD by FBI counter-terrorism Chief Michael Rolince

  19. 23 DAYS PRIOR19 AUG 2001 • FBI lead on Al Qeada, John O’Neil, is forced to resign after a briefcase goes “misplaced” • Mohamed Atta gives a radio “shout out” in Arabic saying “God is Great!” • He is attending flight training school in Palm Beach Florida.

  20. 22 DAYS PRIOR20 AUG 2001 • Hani Hanjour (future hijack pilot of American Airlines Flight 77), takes flight lessons and the instructor thinks he was trained by the military. Hanjour was able to navigate a plane without radar, using terrain recognition system. • Hanjour starts shopping on Travelocity for plane tickets. Dulles IAP to Los Angeles IAP • The FBI attorneys in Washington DC turn down the request for the search warrant.

  21. 21 DAYS PRIOR21 AUG 2001 • $5000 dollars is deposited in to an account for hijacker FayesBanihammad in the United Arab Emirates. • This money was later used to buy plane tickets for Banihammad and another hijacker for United Airlines Flight 175. • A Jordanian in prison from suspected terrorism tells FBI agent of an impending attack against buildings in New York and Washington. “Something big is going to happen.” His credibility is in question and could not provide details on time or place. • CIA fails to notify FBI of two known Al Qeada operatives tracked to the United Stated from Malaysia.

  22. 20 DAYS PRIOR22 AUG 2001 • FBI agents are demanding to know why the CIA did not notify them of the operatives that entered the United States. The CIA and FBI operate out of “Alec Station”. A operations center established to hunt Osama Bin Laden. • Future hijacker pilot, Ziad Jarrah, purchases large maps of a 757 cockpit and also buys a Garmin GPS system.

  23. 19 DAYS PRIOR23 AUG 2001 • CIA director George Tenet is briefed about Moussaoui in a memo titled “Islamic Extremist Learns to Fly.” • NO connect is made between the threats with Al Qaeda and the attacks on the United States. • In Florida, Mohamed Atta loses his license because he fails to show up for a traffic hearing.

  24. 18 DAYS PRIOR24 AUG 2001 • Future hijacker Khalid al-Mihdar and Nawaf al-Hazmi are FINALLY placed on the FBIs terror watch list. • 19 months after the CIA tracked them to the United States. • First plane tickets are purchased by the hijackers. Fayez Banihammad purchased a ticket for United Airlines Flight 175. • CIA cable describes Moussaoui as a potential “suicide hijacker” engaging in “suspicious 747 flight training.”

  25. 17 DAYS PRIOR25 AUG 2001 • Mohamed Atta creates an account with American Airlines and AAdvantage frequent flyers account. • Future hijacker uses his yahoo email account to buy his plane ticket for 11 Sept 2001. He is on flight 77 of American Airlines • This hijacker is Khalid al-Mihdhar and was placed on the terror watch list just the day before. Mohamed Atta

  26. 16 DAYS PRIOR26 AUG 2001 • Future hijacker, Hani Hanjour, practices flight patterns with a rental plane. • Hanjour is the future pilot of American Airlines Flight 77. • Waleed al-Shehri uses his VISA card to purchase a plane ticket for American Airlines Flight 11 Waleed al-Shehri

  27. 15 DAYS PRIOR27 AUG 2001 • Hijacker Nawaf al-Hazmi buys a leatherman tool/knife in Maryland. • Al-Hazmi is suppose to fly on American Airlines Flight 77. • Mohamed Atta has a final planning meeting in room 343 of the Valencia Motel located in Maryland. The team is going to be on American Airlines Flight 77 • INS revokes the VISA of Al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi. • NO request is made for UREGNT EMERGENCY BASIS

  28. 14 DAYS PRIOR28 AUG 2001 • Mohamed Atta buys tickets for himself and Abdulaziz al-Omari for American Airlines Flight 11. • Marwan al-Shehhi buys his ticket for United Airlines Flight 175. He purchases his ticket from the ticket counter at Miami Airport. • FAA warns of possible violence against U.S. air carriers but only for flights in and out of Israel.

  29. 13 DAYS PRIOR29 AUG 2001 • Hijacker Ahmed al-Haznawi buys his ticket for United Airlines Flight 93. Buys ticket through Travelocity.com • Al-Haznawi’s brother, Hamza and Ahmed al-Ghamdi also buy their tickets for United Airlines Flight 175. • Jarrah obtains a fake drivers license from illegal immigrant, Luis Martinez-Flores. Already allowed two others to claim they lived at the address.

  30. 12 DAYS PRIOR30 AUG 2001 • Jarrah buys his tickets for United Airlines Flight 93. • He also attends kickboxing and street fighting classes. • Mohamed Atta buys tool containing large knife. Atta plans on slitting the throats of passengers and crew members on American Airlines Flight 11.

  31. 11 DAYS PRIOR31 AUG 2001 • Future hijacker, Hani Hanjour, buys his ticket for American Airlines Flight 77. • Hanjour and Mawaf al-Hazmi close their Hudson United Bank accounts. • Hamza al-Ghamdi and Ziad Jarrah cancel their leases in Florida.

  32. 10 DAYS PRIOR1 SEP 2001 • Waleed al-Shehri buys a silk shirt and khaki pants in Florida. • This is an attempt for the hijackers to dress as Western as possible. • Hanjour cancels his lease in Paterson, New Jersey. The landlord stated that he was a “gentleman.” • American Airlines issues an internal memo warning that some crew members had their uniforms stolen in Rome, Italy.

  33. 9 DAYS PRIOR2 SEP 2001 • Hijacker, Hani Hanjour, returns to Laurel, Maryland where he meets up with the rest of his team until they board American Airlines Flight 77. • Three of the American Flight 77 hijackers obtain weekly guest passes at a Gold’s Gym in Greenbelt, Maryland.

  34. 8 DAYS PRIOR3 SEP 2001 • The four hijacker pilots have finished a full round of test flights at small airports and all have FAA issued pilots’ licenses. • Mohamed Atta’s fellow hijack planner and roommate, Ramzi bin al-Shibh, receives $1,500 from al-Qaeda. He will use this money to leave Germany, but is arrested in Pakistan. • Egypt officials warn the U.S. of impending al-Qaeda attack. • President Hosni Mubarak says that the warning involved an airplane or an embassy.   35. 7 DAYS PRIOR4 SEP 2001 • Mohamed Atta sends a package to an accomplice in the United Arab Emirates returning several thousand dollars of unused cash. • The FAA are finally told by the FBI that a suspected terrorist named Moussaoui may have been training to hijack a 747 at Kennedy Airport. • The FAA does not issue any additional security alerts. • On this date, Richard Clarke finally meets with Condoleeza Rice and other administration officials to discuss the threat against the U.S. • That same day, Clarke issues a memo urging officials to imagine hundreds dying because of the government's reluctance to pursue al-Qaeda.

  36. 6 DAYS PRIOR5 SEP 2001 • Hanjour and Majed Moqed are photographed using ATMs at a bank in lower Maryland. • FayzeBanihammad wires more than $8,000 to an al-Qaeda bank account in the Middle East. • In Paris, France, the French Ministry of the Interior, hold an emergency session in which the FBI and the CIA both attend. • Both agencies are given information on the bin Laden ties of Zacarias Moussaoui, but the information remains on the FBI’s backburner. • Congress returns from its summer recess and the Senate Intelligence Committee holds a hearing about terrorism. Bin Laden is discussed.

  37. 5 DAYS PRIOR6 SEP 2001 • Abdulaziz al-Omari and Satam al-Suquami head to Boston from Florida. • Osama bin-Laden receives word that the hijackings are scheduled for Tuesday, September 11th. • Hijacker Mohand al-Shehri calls United Airlines to inform them that his name was spelled incorrectly.

  38. 4 DAYS PRIOR7 SEP 2001 • The hijackers, assigned to United Airlines Flight 93, fly from Florida to Newark, New Jersey where they will remain until boarding for their flight.

  39. 3 DAYS PRIOR8 SEP 2001 • American Airlines Flight 77 hijackers empty their bank accounts. They give their money to Mohamed Atta. • Atta wires almost $8,000 to the Wall Street Exchange Center in Dubai from the Giant store in Laurel, Maryland. • Atta and several other ringleaders go to a final dinner at one of their favorite restaurants in Laurel, Maryland.

  40. 2 DAYS PRIOR9 SEP 2001 • Mohamed Atta flies from Maryland to Boston and meets fellow hijacker Marwan al-Shehhi. • Hijacker, Ziad Jarrah, receives a speeding ticket in Laurel, Maryland as he heads north on I-95. • FBI agent, Ali Soufan, says “bin Laden is appeasing the Taliban. Now the big ones is coming.”

  41. 1 DAY PRIOR10 SEP 2001 • Mohamed Atta and Abdulaziz al-Omari make a last minute decision to drive to Portland, Maine. Likely trying to stagger the hijackers arrival at Boston’s airport. • Ziad Jarrah sends a farewell letter to his girlfriend, AyselSengun. He thanks her for sticking with him through five difficult years. • Outside of Washington, at the NSA, electronic intercepts pick up conversations between two suspected al-Qaeda leaders. One reads “the match begins tomorrow” the other “tomorrow is zero day.” This conversation will not be translated and transcribed until September 12, 2001.

  43. September 11, 2001 • 0600 – Atta and Al-Omari fly from Maine to Boston • 0652 – Al-Shehhi calls Atta to confirm plans are set • 0735 – Atta and al-Omari board AA Flight 11 • 0759 – AA Flight 11 depart for Los Angeles from Boston. 92 Souls

  44. September 11, 2001 • 0813 – Flight 11 has its last routine communication with the FAA • 0814 – Flight 11 is Hijacked – Waleed and al-Shehri stab two flight attendants. Atta heads right for cockpit and takes control. • 0814 – United Airlines Flight 175 Departs from Boston enroute to LAX. 65 Souls. • 0819 – Betty Ong of Flight 11 alert American Airlines that “The cockpit is not answering, somebody’s stabbed in business class – and I think there’s MACE – that we can’t breathe – I don’t know , I think we’re getting hijacked.” • 0820 – FAA Boston Center decide that Flight 11 has probably been hijacked. • 0820 – American Airlines Flight 77 departs Dulles for LAX. 64 souls.

September 11, 2001 • 0824 – Flight 11 makes a radio transmission. • 0825 – FAA Boston Center alerts other centers of Flight 11 • 0826 – Turns 100 degrees headed towards New York • 0834 – Boston Center notifies Otis ANG Base of Flight 11. Directed to contact NORAD. • 0834 – two F-15 pilots suit up. • 0837 – Flight 175 confirms sighting of Flight 11. 10 miles to its south. • 0837 – request for military help to intercept plane • 0842 – United Airlines Flight 93 departs Newark, NJ to San Fran. 44 Souls

September 11, 2001 • 0842-0846 – Flight 175 is hijacked • 0846 – Two F-15 are dispatched to intercept Flight 11. • 0846:30 – American Airlines Flight 11 crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Plane was traveling approximately 466 mph and hit the tower between the 93 and 99 floor. • 0846:43 – Battalion Chief of FDNY calls in the crash. • 0850 – 0854 – Flight 77 is Hijacked. • 0851 – Flight 175 changed its transponder twice. No contact with flight. • 0854 – Flight 77 deviates from its assigned course.

  47. September 11, 2001 • 0856 – 10 minutes after the North Tower was hit by Flight 11, the transponder of Flight 77 is turned off. During the black out, Flight 77 turned east and was unnoticed by controllers. Flight 77 fly's for 36 minutes undetected due east towards Washington, DC. • 0858 – Flight 175 is heading towards New York City. • 0901-0902 – New York FAA center tells Central Command that military help is needed. • 0902 – evacuation of both towers is ordered. • 0903:02 – Flight 175 crashes into the South tower. The plane was traveling at 590 mph and hit between floors 77-85. • The impact is seen LIVE on tv due to numerous television stations covering the first crash.

  48. September 11, 2001 • 0903 – President Bush enters the classroom where he is visiting. • 0903 – FAA New York tells NORAD that Flight 175 is hijacked. Unfortunately the plane has just crashed at the same time. • 0905 – President Bush is told that the second plane has crashed. • 0908 – FAA bans all takeoffs of all flights bound to or going through airspace of New York. • 0914 – President Bush is in his holding room and is able to talk to the members of his staff. • 0917 – Osama Bin Laden is stated to be the probable suspect on CBS • 0921 – All access to Manhattan is closed
