  3. Why do we use taxonomy? • Keep order of living things • Communicate in the same language with other scientists around the world Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist, established taxonomy in the 18th century.

  4. How are organisms grouped? • Body Systems • Shape • Size • Color • How it gets food

  5. Levels of Classification The number of animals in each group gets smaller as you move down. General Specific

  6. Tip: Make up a sentence to remember the levels of classification. Use the same first letters as the first letters in each level. My sentence: King Phillip cuts onions for good students.

  7. Binomial Nomenclature Each species has a scientific name The two most specific levels are used. Genus species Panthera tigris = tiger
