Bell Ringer: A thesis is the main idea of a paper or essay; it must be something arguable. Example: “Wall*E is the best animated movie ever made because of its creative music, groundbreaking animation and universal theme.” Some people think Facebook is helping teens, others think the social networking site is a distraction. Write three (3) thesis statements about Facebook that either support, or do not support the claims above.
How to Make a Thesis Statement (And Quote Sandwich Review) Mr. Short / English 9 / May 3rd, 2011
What’s a Thesis Statement?: • A thesis statement: • tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion. • tells the reader what to expect from the paper. • directly answers the question asked of you. • A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel. • makes a claim that others might dispute. • Includes subtopics
Thesis Example: Psychologists have argued for decades about how a person’s character is formed. Numerous psychologists believe that one’s birth order (i.e. place in the family as the youngest, oldest, or middle child) has the greatest influence. I believe birth order can have a significant impact in the formation of a child’s character based on my own experience growing up in a family of four children.Birth order can strongly affect one’s relationship with parents, relationships with others, and how one views responsibility as an adult. The thesis statement contains the main idea that controls the content of the essay. Subpoints in the thesis or nearby help the reader know how the essay will be organized
Subtopic Examples: The large influx of people to California has had major effects on the state. No subtopics are named in this thesis statement.
Subtopics: Subtopic #2 The large influx of people to California has had major effects on the ability of the state to provide housing, electricity, and jobs for all residents. Subtopic #3 Subtopic #1 This statement names three subtopics.
Thesis Statement: • How to create a thesis statement: • Chose on a topic. • Decide on your position. • Create a focused sentence around your topic and position. • Be sure this sentence is something that can be agreed or disagreed with. • This is an opinion, that you will be supporting and backing up throughout the entire paper.
Create A Thesis Statement: • Use the notes from the previous slide, and create three (3) possible thesis statements for your selected topic.
Is My Thesis Statement Strong?: • Do I answer the question? • Me sure your thesis statement addresses the topic and answers a question. • Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? • Can someone have a separate opinion, or argue with your thesis statement? • Is my thesis statement specific enough? • Are you focused on something particular and exact?
Is My Thesis Statement Strong?: • Does my essay support my thesis specifically and without wandering? • Be sure your focus is specific to one aspect of your topic and does not jump around to other ideas. • Does my thesis pass the "So what?" test? • If a reader's first response is, "So what?" then you need to clarify, to forge a relationship, or to connect to a larger issue. • Does my thesis pass the "how and why?" test? • If a reader's first response is "how?" or "why?" your thesis may be too open-ended and lack guidance for the reader. See what you can add to give the reader a better take on your position right from the beginning.
Is My Thesis Statement Strong?: • Bad: • Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn is a great American novel. • Better: • In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain develops a contrast between life on the river and life on the shore. • Best: • Through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain's Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave "civilized" society and go back to nature. Thesis Statement Key Features: • states the main idea of the essay in a complete sentence, not in a question. • is usually at the end of an introduction. • states an opinion or attitude on a topic. It doesn’t just state the topic, itself. • often lists subtopics.
Quote Sandwiches: • Three Main Sections: • Context • Quote • Analysis
Quote Sandwich: Slim is the most respected man on the ranch. He was very calm, and“there was a gravity in his manner and a quite so profound that all talk stopped when he spoke. His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject” (Steinbeck 33).This description, given when we first meet Slim, shows the attitude of others toward him. This scene foreshadows Candy looking to Slim for a reversal on the decision to shoot his dog. Candy does so, because Slim’s word is law and he is the only one that can change the decision of the men. Context Quote Analysis
