  1. Student Leadership Fall Retreat September 19-21, 2003 A collaboration between: Chandler-Gilbert Community College Mesa Community College Phoenix College

  2. Purpose On September 19, 2003, approximately 80 students from Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Mesa Community College and Phoenix College gathered for a three-day Student Leadership Fall Retreat held at Chauncey Ranch in Mayer, AZ. The Retreat at Chauncey Ranch was the result of collaboration and planning between three institutions in the Maricopa Community College District. The event was designed to enhance the leadership skills and opportunities for the students and showcased the mentoring resources of our staff and faculty as they presented classes.

  3. Throughout the weekend, the students participated in workshops on: • Event Planning • Time Management • Leadership Styles • Goal Setting • Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. • Faculty and staff from throughout the MCCD presented the workshops.

  4. On Saturday, the students challenged themselves on a climbing wall and high ropes course. Several of the students went kayaking or hiking for the first time in their lives. The outdoor activities demonstrated to many students that they were capable of stepping out of their comfort zones and conquering their fears with the help and support of others.

  5. Groups composed of students from all three colleges, created and performed skits on topics such as: • fiscal responsibility • successful communication • organizational skills • ethics These performances proved to be the highlight of the retreat.

  6. The students represented the wonderful diversity, talent, and potential present throughout MCCD. • The students included: • First semester students • Adult re-entry students • International students • Student government officers • Students from Black Student Union, MEChA, Hispanic Student Organization, Phi Theta Kappa, Future Teachers of America, International Club, Christians in Action, Performing Arts Organization, and Political Science Organization

  7. Conclusion We are extremely proud of the way in which our students conducted themselves throughout the weekend. Most of them were strangers to one another before the trip, but they interacted easily with one another and reached out to include one another. They behaved professionally, with a sense of humor, energy, and compassion for one another that demonstrated they truly are leaders.
