Evaluating Surface and Groundwater Drought Impact on Aquatic Habitat Quality in Torysa River, Slovakia

This study assesses the occurrence and impact of meteorological, surface water, and groundwater droughts on the aquatic habitat quality in the Torysa River catchment. The habitat suitability curves for the barbell fish species are derived using the IFIM methodology, and the RHABSIM model is used to calculate the minimum discharge required for habitat sustainability. The study also evaluates the influence of water abstraction on the Q90 value and identifies periods with discharge below the minimum flow threshold.

CONCLUSIONS • Winter and summer drought develops in the catchment, winter droughts prevail • There is a distinct difference in drought occurrence in the headwater part of the catchment non affected by water abstraction and the downstream part • The value of 1.11 m3.s-1was estimated as the reference value of the combined measure of habitat suitability for barbell fish • The value of 0.300 m3.s-1was estimated as the minimum flow for barbell habitat quality preservation at Pecovska Nova Ves • There wereestimated14 periods with the discharge value below the habitat minimum flow Fendekova, Slivova, Demeterova, Macura, Zenisova, Fendek, Gregor &Jalcovikova ComeniusUniversity, Slovak UniversityofTechnology and Slovak HydrometeorologicalInstitute in Bratislava, Slovakia
