number of businesses, especially the ​eCommerce ​​segment. Even the largest social media site in

the world Facebook now allows sellers to directly do business with their customers using

Facebook. This feature is particularly helpful for the small businesses and artists because this

gives them a direct link to their target customer base. The only question that remains is, how

can businesses ever manage so many inquiries and questions of the customers over Facebook?

Points Live is a Bangkok based aggregator of a huge range of different services and goods

including shipping, under one roof. Points Live was focusing mainly on establishing the business

throughout Thailand. The main inspiration behind this venture was the limited availability of

goods and services in the remote regions. Hence, through Facebook, so many shops and service

providers of Bangkok could create their customer base in rural areas easily. Also, rather than all

shops creating their individual websites which the customers might have to go through

individually, a unified platform on Facebook itself could effectively serve the needs of so many

people.

READING MINDS OF THE TARGET AUDIENCE!

The biggest concern about the chatbots is the quality of conversation. ​Chatbots ​​are tricky when

it comes to making a conversation. Any wrong or offensive responses by the bot can promptly

turn a customer away. Starting from the greetings and language selection to the final checkout

process, the team researched the conversation sensibilities and language preferences of

Thailand. We brainstormed hard to come up with a variety of hypothetical scenarios and we

drafted more than 200 sets of responses in English and Thai languages, which the chatbot

would use to interact with people on Facebook.

NEXT STEP: CRAFTING AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE!

Understanding the cultural mix and attitude of the people is equally important to craft a perfect

user experience. How people browse through products or services? What type of information

they look for? How much they are comfortable with typing in their responses? Team

SearchNative deliberated on all the different possible ways to make this interaction as smooth

as possible. And came up with a thorough plan for developing the chatbot ‘AKIN’.

PUT ON THE TECH SHOES AND GET CODING!

CodeIgniter is the best platform to develop back end for this chatbot. This platform is the best

to create seamless admin panel so that the client can manage it easily. For the database

management the team identified PHP and MySQL as the best platform and for the eCommerce

payment gateway C2C was selected, and the game began.

The biggest challenge was to ​develop the chatbot within the API framework provided by

Facebook itself. The development process begun with acquiring the Facebook Page ID, Page

Token, and User Access Token. For the next 3 months, we dedicated our life to ‘AKIN’!

‘AKIN’ IS RUNNING AS SMOOTH AS EVER. CHECKOUT THE FEATURES!

We have taken utmost caution that the right product is presented before the user. In the

beginning of the chat itself, ‘AKIN’ confirms the preferred language of the user. To make the

products available we used different visual approaches like Product Listings, Most Popular

Product/ Service, Discover Latest Product, Category Buttons, Quick Picks, and Carousal

Browsing. These techniques helped the user in reaching the correct product with minimum

need of typing in the text. Using the set of responses outlined by the team, ‘AKIN’ guides the

user through the product/ service browsing process. Also, the ​Add To Cart and Checkout

features in the chatbot are set up in the way that the user experiences a swift shopping

process.

Technology is tumultuous and unpredictable, but it gives a great experience nevertheless.
