  1. Inspector Calls Controlled Assessment Feedback on what you have written so far... • Good understanding of the plot and themes. • Most people have really tried to answer the question. • The quality and accuracy of most of the language used is of a good standard. • Most people would achieve a C grade if this current standard is maintained today.

  2. Inspector Calls Controlled Assessment Feedback on what you have written so far... Improvements to make to achieve B & A grades – YOUR TARGETS! : • Make sure you comment on how each dramatic technique affects the audience at that point in the play and why Priestley wants them to feel this way. • Link these points back to the theme of RESPONSIBILITY that Priestley is exploring through the play...AND...any other personal views that you have about the play. • Write about 4-5 different examples from each of the 2 acts you are exploring (Act 1 and Act 3). • Make sure spellings are accurate, sentences make sense and that you use the clearest choice of word order! • Read over what you have written so far and correct it. It will be acceptable to add in points/quotes on your essay. Don’t worry about that! • Don’t expect the examiner to know what you mean by EXPOSITION or any of the other techniques you spot – explain the reason why Priestley chose to use ‘well made play’ structure and how it helps him to get his point across in the most direct way!

  3. Another way of thinking about the essay title is... How do the Dramatic devices Priestley chose help to get the message of the play across to the audience? To answer this question you need to think about how the audience’s responses are manipulated by the way events are shown to them on stage. To produce a response at a higher level (B, A, A*) you need to always keep in mind the key questions: • What are the audience shown? • When are they being shown it? • Why are they being shown it? • How is it being shown? • How does it link to the themes of the play (RESPONSIBILITY)? Use quotations from Act 1 and Act 3 that show how different dramatic techniques are trying to change/shape the way the audience think about the action or characters. Use sentence starters and phrases that help you to connect your thinking... This shows... This conveys the idea that... Priestley’s intention is that... This implies... This demonstrates... The audience are aware that.... This makes them consider... The audience are shown this because... The character is demonstrating... At this point in the play... The consequences of this are... The audience are now expected to realise... This connects directly to the theme of the play...
