  1. An Inspector Calls Based on the title, mind map everything that you think this play could be about…

  2. Lesson Objectives • To begin to consider the author of An Inspector Calls • To be able to use a variety of methods to predict what the play is going to be about.

  3. Task 1 • All of you have been given a domino card. On one side is a question and on the other, an answer. • You need to form a circle where every question is matched to its correct answer…

  4. Based on this exercise… • Are there any ideas or themes here, based on Priestley’s life that you would like to know more about? • For example, what was the Communist Party, and what was Priestley’s exact involvement?

  5. J.B. Priestley • Based on what we have learnt about Priestley, what are you initial ideas about the plot or themes that might occur in An Inspector Calls?

  6. Predictions… • We’re now going to look a variety of covers and posters for An Inspector Calls. For each one, you need to decide what you think the following will be: • setting – both in time and place; • plot – what happens; • characters; • themes; • any other ideas.

  7. Predictions… • For each, you will have 2 minutes to make of your ideas individually • Then you will share your ideas with a partner for 2 minutes • We’ll then take feedback as a class… • At each stage, remember to add to your notes: this will help with revision in the summer. • Remember to justify each answer

  8. Which cover do you prefer? Why?

  9. Whodunit? • You’re now going to see a variety of extracts from the play…Based on these, you need to further your predictions… • This time, you’ll be working in groups of 3 or 4 for each excerpt before feeding back…

  10. ‘Two hours ago a young woman died in the Infirmary …’

  11. To end the lesson • Based on what you have learnt, write in no more than 3 sentences what you think the play is going to be about…
