Northern Research Internships(NRINT) • Opportunity to do research in Canada’s North • No fixed deadlines, apply 8 weeks before start of northern work • Up to 30 awards per year (first come, first served) • How to apply: • Letter from supervisor • Letter from Northern partner • NRINT Agreement signed by all parties • Form 200 • Up to $14,000 for 12-16 weeks, within 12 months
Aboriginal Ambassadors in the Natural Sciences and Engineering Supplement Program (AANSE) • AANSE supplements aim to engage Aboriginal students and fellows in promoting interest and participation in the natural sciences and engineering. • Candidates visit Canada’s Aboriginal communities and schools to share their research and education experiences or participate in science promotion events and activities.

Graduate Students • Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) / Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) • Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program (Vanier CGS) • Canada Graduate Scholarships Foreign Study Supplements Program (CGS-FSS) • Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS) • Industrial Innovation Scholarships (IIS) for students registered at a university inQuebec • NSERC/MITACS Scholarship • Summer Programs in in Japan or Taiwan
Graduate Students • Maximum of 4 years support (full-time equivalent) • Total = Master’s + PhD support • Any combination of Vanier CGS, CGS, PGS, IPS, IIS, NSERC/MITACS

CGS/PGS M and D * As of December 31st of the year of application in program for which support is requested
PGS M Extension: possible 2nd year of support Eligible if: • Program and award started at the same time OR • Program started in January, award taken up in May of the same year
CGS/PGS D Support • Support available for 2 or 3 years • Decision made by NSERC and based on • the number of months completed in the program for which funding is requested; and • NSERC funding previously held • 4 year maximum total funding
What Happens to the Application at your university? • You submit to department/university • University committees select applicants to fill NSERC quota • Quota of applications sent to NSERC • University informs unsuccessful applicants
What Happens to the Application at NSERC? • Verification of eligibility of applicant and proposed research by Program Officers • Selection committees members review all applications • Top-ranked applicants offered CGS • PGS offered to next group of applicants • Applicants informed of NSERC’s decision • Feedback available upon request
Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships • Tri-Agency program supporting students who achieved outstanding success in their studies and who will pursue a doctoral program at a Canadian University. • $50,000 / yr for 2 or 3 years • Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, International citizens. • Candidates must be nominated by the Canadian University where they will pursue doctoral studies. Contact the university’s Faculty of Graduate Studies. • Can only be held at nominating university (non-transferable).
Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships • Students may be nominated/submit applications to the university for NSERC Vanier CGS, and CGS/PGS at the same time. • Students nominated by university for a Vanier CGS must immediately contact NSERC, and the university where the CGS/PGS application was submitted to withdraw the latter. • Two-tier review process: NSERC selection committee, with final selection by the Vanier Selection Board. • Nominees not recommended to Vanier Selection Board will be offered an Alexander Graham Bell CGS, if eligible. • NSERC Deadline: November 14, 2008. Results to be announced in May 2009.
Canada Graduate Scholarships Foreign Study Supplements Program (CGS-FSS) • Supports high-calibre graduate students in research experiences at research institutions outside of Canada. • Up to $6000 for 4-6 months. • Universities to be allocated a certain number of supplements based on the number of CGS and Vanier CGS held at that university. • 60 awards available
CGS-FSS • Must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. • Universities to be allocated a certain number of supplements based on the number of CGS and Vanier CGS held at that university • Deadline: December 10, 2008.
Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS) • Collaboration between university, student and host organization • No NSERC deadline • Quick application turn around • $21K minimum for Master’s level - more than PGSM/CGSM ($17K) NEW: FOREIGN STUDENTS MAY APPLY
IPS Agreement • Must cover duration of scholarship • Company's commitment ($6,000/year minimum) • Intellectual property rights • Student’s time at company (minimum average of 50 days/year) • No delay in degree granting due to confidentiality issues
NSERC/MITACS Scholarship • A collaboration with MITACS, a Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) that conducts research in the mathematical sciences • Combines features of the NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship (IPS) program and the MITACS Internship Program • Offers more funding than the IPS alone • Graduate student will receive $22,500/year as a scholarship • Supervisor will receive the remaining $7,500/year

Collaborative Research And Training Experience (CREATE) Eligibility Majority of the group must be from NSE fields Funding Six years (Year 1: up to $150,000, Years 2-6: up to $300,000 annually) At least 80 per cent of funds spent on stipends to HQP Up to 30 per cent of which may be for students not enrolled in NSE fields Research training experience can target any trainee level Undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows
