  4. AGENDA • Complete the allusion chart: look at the back for the rubric: due tomorrow! • Two correct answers are provided on later slides for you to model. • Begin reading! • Keep track of characters and their actions as we read. • First drafts of restaurant reviews are due ASAP.

  5. What a crazy family! • Complete the family tree.

  6. DEFINITIONS • Primogeniture: the system of inheritance or succession by the firstborn child, specifically the eldest son. • How do you feel about this system? Is it still in place now?

  7. DEFINITIONS • Dowry: the money, goods, or estate that a wife brings to her husband at marriage. • Traditionally, the wife’s parents pay for their daughter’s wedding. Do you agree or disagree with this tradition?

  8. DEFINITIONS • Allusion: an implied or indirect reference to a person, event, thing or idea that the writer assumes the reader will understand. • My brother was Romeo to her Juliet.

  9. Flo Rida uses the term “Shawty” to describe any female he may be interested in. Also, he raps that the “Shawty” is wearing Apple Bottom jeans. This seems to indicate that the “Shawty” in question is wearing jeans that will accentuate her buttocks, as that brand was created—in some part—to highlight and focus on women who wished to draw attention to their apple-shaped behinds.

  10. Allusions—a completed response • West is making an allusion to the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Simpson was accused of killing his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and a friend, Ronald Goldman. A main piece of evidence was the presence of a bloody Isotoners glove, which Simpson defense attorney Johnnie Cochran famously quipped: “If the glove doesn’t fit, you must acquit.”

  11. Allusions—a completed response • By saying that he has been “on ya” since this murder trial of 1994, West is saying that he has been a rapper for many years. In addition, by making mention of the “Isotoners,” it is clear that West feels that Simpson is guilty of the crimes for which he was acquitted.
