  3. Petra • Wonder: One of The Seven New Wonders of the World is the city of Petra. • Where is it? It is located in Jordan. • Who built it? It was built by the Nabatean people. • When was it built? It was built between 300 BCE and 100 CE. • Curiosities: • This city is inside a mountain. • It is sometimes called “the rose red city” because of its colors. • The end of the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was filmed in Petra.

  4. The Taj Mahal • Wonder: One of The Seven New Wonders of the World is the Taj Mahal. • Where is it? It is located in India. • Who built it? It was built by the Emperor Shah Jahan. • When was it built? It was built in 1632. • Curiosities: • The Emperor built the monument as a present for his dead wife. • About 22,000 men and 1,000 elephants worked for 22 years to build it. • The Emperor cut off the hands of the workers after they finished the temple, because he didn’t want them to make another monument as beautiful as the Taj Mahal.

  5. The Great Wall of China • Wonder: One of The Seven New Wonders of the World is the Great Wall of China. • Where is it? It is located in China. • Who built it? It was built by the Emperor Qin Shi Huang. • When was it built? It was built in the 3rd century BCE. • Curiosities: • Between 1368 and 1644, the Ming Emperors made the wall longer. • For many years, people stole stones from the wall to build their houses.

  6. The Colosseum • Wonder: One of The Seven New Wonders of the World is the Colosseum. • Where is it? It is located in Italy. • Who built it? It was built by the Roman Emperor Vespasian. • When was it built? It was built in 72 CE. • Curiosities: • Fights with gladiators and dangerous animals were a great attraction. • A large part of the building fell down in an earthquake in 1349.

  7. Machu Picchu • Wonder: One of The Seven New Wonders of the World is the city of Machu Picchu. • Where is it? It is located in Peru. • Who built it? It was built by the Incas. • When was it built? It was built in 1450. • Curiosities: • It is called “The City in the Clouds”. • Only 750 people lived in the city. • The Spanish didn’t find Machu Picchu when they invaded the country.

  8. Chichén Itzá • Wonder: One of The Seven New Wonders of the World is the city of Chichén Itzá. • Where is it? It is located in Mexico. • Who built it? It was built by the Mayans. • When was it built? It was built in the 6th century CE. • Curiosities: • El Castillo, the temple of Kukulcán, is the most famous building in the city. • Kukulcán was a Mayan god; half bird, half snake. • The Mayans left the city in 1200. Nobody knows why.

It was built by Heitor da Silva Costa, Carlos Oswald, and Paul Landowski. • When was it built? It was built in 1931. • Curiosities: • In 2008, the statue was hit by lightning on the head and the fingers. • In 2010, some people wrote words on the statue’s face. • Workers used stones from Sweden to build the statue.
