  3. Jefferson set out to buy the port in New Orleans and some land around it from France. • He offered $2 million. Napoleon did not want to sell. • He needed money for France to fight Great Britain in a war. • Napoleon decided to sell the entire Louisiana Territory for $15 million! • This doubled the size of the US for only about 4 cents an acre.   4. Lewis was a strong reader and writer. • He was interested in plants, animals and birds. • Clark was a skilled mapmaker. • He was very detailed on his maps. • Chose men that would be good for the expedition. • Created maps and trails for others to follow. Lewis & Clark

Find a river that would provide a route to trade connecting to the Pacific Ocean. • Establish a good relationship with Native Americans and find out everything you can about them. • Study the soil, plants, animals, minerals, climate and keep careful, detailed notes of their findings. The expedition began in May 1804 from St. Louis, Missouri. • During the first winter, they hired a French Canadian fur trapper and his Shoshone wife, Sacagawea, to act as interpreters and guides. • They returned with their notes in September 1806. • They even brought back some animals they found along the way. Shoshone Native American that helped translate with Native American tribes. • She carried her baby on her back that signaled to other tribes that they came in peace. • She got horses from the Shoshone tribe for the men to ride over the Rocky Mountains. • She was a great guide for the group. Difficulties Triumphs Saw beautiful birds, animals, flowers, and trees Saw prairie grasses, mountains, rushing waters Met and made friends with Native American tribes Gathered artifacts, customs, and languages from the Native Americans Blazed trails across the new lands west Found plants and trees Discovered and mapped rivers and mountains Found new foods to eat Had a chance to be creative and show courage Became braver and developed leadership Only lost one person Traveled more than 7500 miles safely Carried out all of President Jefferson’s wishes Recorded for all time what they saw • Encountered a grizzly bear and had to shoot it • Almost starved several times, not enough food • Had to eat weird things like roots and candles • Had fleas and ticks • Had fights and conflicts with Indian people • Almost froze to death • Lost valuable supplies • Felt lonesome for home and easy living • One person died of appendicitis • Steep, rocky slopes of mountains • Rattlesnakes • Diseases • Rapids on the rivers • Weather like too much rain or cold
