  1. Personal Narratives A personal narrative tells the true story of something that has happened to you…

  2. YOUR Personal Narrative must include… • MUST be typed! • BVM heading with a title • 5 paragraphs • 1 introductory paragraph • 3 body paragraphs (details) • 1 conclusion paragraph • Each paragraph should have AT LEAST 6-8 good, solid sentences. • Indent each paragraph • Double-space your paper (Highlight, ctrl 2)

  3. Let’s take a closer look at each paragraph and some examples… Here we go!

  4. Paragraph 1: Introduction • Start with an engaging opening sentence that will make the reader want to know more. • Set the scene! • Give details: Where were you? Who were you with? When was this? • What is going on? • Let’s look at a good example of each paragraph…

  5. Introduction Paragraph Example: Standing backstage, I could feel my heart thumping in my chest. “Just relax,” my friend Jenny whispered. “You’re ready for this.” I nodded. Jenny was right. I’d been practicing my song for the school talent show for six weeks. Still, picturing an audience packed with kids, parents and teachers made me want to run out the door. How would I ever be able to make it?

  6. REMEMBER! • You DO NOT want to say things like, “This is my personal narrative” or “Now I will tell you how I won the championship game.” • We know all these things already, we’re reading it!  • You DO want to use simple, compound, and complex sentences. • Don’t forget about WORD CHOICE.

  7. Paragraph 2: Body • Describe the details of the beginning of the experience… • What happened next? • What were you thinking or feeling? • Remember! This is a PERSONAL narrative. You want to make it unique to your own life. • Include dialogue, thoughts, feelings, etc.

  8. Body Paragraph Example: “Too late for that,” I thought, as Mr. Peterson announced my song. Jenny gave me a nudge, and suddenly I was on the stage. Standing in the spotlight, I grasped the microphone and belted out the lyrics. I heard my voice pour through the speakers and fill the room. “It’s going well,” I thought to myself. “Don’t mess up.”

  9. Paragraph #3: Body (continued) • Describe the details of the middle of the experience…What happened next? • Include details: • What did you hear? • What did you see? • How did you feel? • REMEMBER! There are 3paragraphs involved in the body…these are used to detail your story!

  10. Body Paragraph Example (continued): I looked out at the sea of faces. The auditorium was dark, but I could see hundreds of eyes staring back at me. I was scared, exhilarated, and shaking all at once. The smell of candy bars and popcorn filled the room. “I hope Jenny is saving some for me,” I thought, as I started the chorus one last time.

  11. Paragraph #4: Body (continued) • Describe the details of the end of the experience. • What happened to complete the experience? • How did it end?

  12. Body Paragraph Example (continued) As I finished the song, the audience began to clap. “Yeah, Katie!” one kid yelled. “You rock!” screeched another. I took a bow and walked offstage with a smile plastered across my face. It was the most surreal, yet exhilarating, experience of my life. “How many days until next year’s talent show?” I asked Jenny.

  13. Conclusion Paragraph • Wrap up and describe the outcome of the experience. • How do you feel about what happened? • How has it affected you? • How has this experience changed things you do or how you think?

  14. Conclusion Paragraph Example: Overcoming my fear of performing on stage was the greatest accomplishment of my life. I never thought I could do it, but with the support of my school and my friends, I did! Setting a goal for myself and working hard to reach it was truly an amazing experience. Performing for hundreds of people was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life, but I am glad I persevered. I now know that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to.

  15. Final Copy • Check: • Is my narrative neatly typed? • Are all words spelled correctly? • Is my grammar correct? • Is my punctuation correct? Are my periods, commas, etc in the right place? • Have I used a good mix of simple, compound, and complex sentences? • Are all beginning sentences and proper nouns capitalized? • Have I fixed all run-on sentences/fragments? • Are all 5 paragraphs indented? • Is my narrative double-spaced?
