  1. Temperature Variations of Rotational Drag on Ferromagnetic Nanowires in Viscous Fluids Zhuoyan Li Johns Hopkins University Department of Physics and Astronomy Dr. Alexandre Anguelouch and Dr. Dan Reich

  2. Purpose • to understand general rheological properties of 2D films • for example: elucidate the fundamental hydrodynamic laws surrounding cell membranes and protein bodies

  3. Ni Nanowires • <picture/schematic of a still from video>

  4. Microscope Microscope setup: Helmhotz coils, temperature probes, Nikon camera, LabView, LiveCell

  5. Sample preparation The petri dish contains nanowires in-between an upper layer of silicone oil and a lower layer of glycerol solution

  6. Graph of Angle vs. Time

  7. Close Up of High Quality Fit

  8. Analysis of Data • Movie of a single nanowire which has a step magnetic field applied to it

  9. Graph of Viscosity vs. Temperature

  10. Conclusion • There is a clear difference between the viscosity of thin films and bulk fluid • As shown in the analysis of data, the k coefficient fit is very reliable • The slopes of the different solutions are distinct curves which can be reproduced

  11. Acknowledgements • I would like to thank Dr. Anguelouch for teaching and guiding me through all the protocol and experiments • I would also like to thank Dr. Reich for allowing me to work in his lab and providing me with background information about the research • I want to also thank Stuart and Jim for being so accommodating and always willing to lend a helping hand • Finally, I want to express gratitude towards Mrs. Lonsdale and Dr. Cammarata for providing me with this opportunity in MRSEC
