Who? • Cyrus “The Great” • Ruled from 559 to 530 B.C. • First ruler and founder of the Persian Empire • Declared the first Charter of Human Rights • Ruled with a policy of toleration • Darius I • Ruled from 521 to 486 B.C. • Extended the Persian Empire to the Indus River • Divided the Empire into 20 provinces, called satrapies • Named governor, or satrap over each Province

  3. What? • The Persian Empire was empire that was created and ruled through a combination of a strong military, skillful leadership, tolerance, and an effective government

  4. Where? • The Persian Empire extended from the eastern boarders of Greece to the Indus River Valley and as far south through Palestine to Egypt.

  5. When? • 550 to 331 B.C.

  6. Why? • The Empire emerged through the leadership of Cyrus “the Great’ • He wanted to enlarge his kingdom through conquest of nearby lands and then unite them into one empire

  7. How? • Cyrus began by taking control of the land of Media • He then conquered Anatolia (Asia Minor) • He then moved east in his conquest of the Fertile Crescent • Darius I expanded the Empire beyond the Indus River Valley

  8. Your Task • Follow the directions of the Handout • Use the Readings and your Timeline to complete the following information • Fill in the Map coloring the region the land that the Persian Empire occupied • On the Map: Identify the Rivers within the Empire and the capital city
