  1. Maximillien Robespierre By Marissa Dominguez W. Stiern Middle School Ms. Marshall 2009-210 7.11 HSS

  2. Growing Up • He was born May 6,1758 in Arras, France. • His full name is Maximilien Isidore de Robespierre. • When he was only six years of age his mother died and his father, a lawyer, abandoned his family. • He was born of a poor family in the northern most tip of France. He was born of Irish origin.

  3. His Later Years • He received a law degree from the College Louis-le-Grand in Paris, France. He practiced law in Arras. • When he was 30 years old, Maximilien was elected French legislature to the Estates General. Before, he was writing articles with his opinions about public role being a voice calling for political change.

  4. His Role in Revolution • To people, his speeches were extreme, his belief in things such as civil liberty, equality, his refusal to compromise, and his anger against authority got him very little support in the legislature. • He liked giving votes to, not only property owners, but all men, he also opposed slavery in the colonies.

  5. His Job • From 1754-1793 Maximilien was a critic of King Louis XVI and those who supported ruling by a single person. • Out of suspicion of the king he spoke and wrote in opposition about the events, all until August 1792, when the monarchy was taken over and the First Republic was established.

  6. His Speeches • In the beginning of the Revolution, Maximilien gave many speeches from about 1789-1791. • Robespierre was popular when it came to meetings. His fellow members of the Jacobins club called him “The Incorruptible” because of his honesty and firm sense of right and wrong.

  7. His Time in Power • Robespierre was elected to govern the country and draft a constitution along with a whole group of representatives. • He was a harsh critic of the king and because of his well-prepared and magnificent speeches, the king was put on trial and found guilty. • Later in 1793 the king was executed.

  8. The Girondlins • As the months followed Robespierre took his anger out on a group of people who were against numerous abrupt changes. • They were called the Girondlins, Maximilien removed them and executed them, so the Girondlins tried to stop him but they couldn’t.

  9. His Death • He was one of the main leaders of The Reign of Terror and he was beheaded by the French Government in July of 1794. • He was beheaded because he questioned the authority of The French Government. • His death ended the Reign of Terror.
