D-IIID PAC Meeting Jan. 30-Feb. 1 2007
Summary was given in four parts (corresponding to new D-IIID organization • Intro - Parker • Fusion Sciences Program - Sybille Guenter • AT - Claude Gormezzano • ITER Support - Guenter Janeschitz
Parker Comments • Great Praise for LTOA • 10 weeks to little operations time • But even with more time more focus required - ITER design requirements and unique capabilities • 5 year plan - broad (understandably) • But more specifics on transport and diagnostics • Endorse 10 s pulses, 10 MW ECH and 8th ion source • More study of how to handle 240 MJ • Question tilting beams • Want talk on upgrades next time
Fusion Science Program • What topics to take lead non • Unique fluctuation diagnostics • Rotation effects on transport • Transport at high beta-n (AT crucial) • Pedestal research • 2D neutral diagnostic - neutral fuelling • Diagnostic Development - Pedestal
AT • Hybrid Regime at low torque and radiative divertor • Look at - • Change of current profile due to ELM’s • Fast ion transport by AE’s • Hybrid with ECH alone • RWM at low rotation with ELM’s • Fueling scenarios - tolerable edge conditions • Current profile control
ITER Physics • Faster-Faster-Faster • ELM suppression now!! • In ITER relevant conditions (rot. Te/Ti, pellets) • RWM coils over rotation • Vary error field • Disruption avoidance • PFC - more 13C O2 bake at 250 C • Hybrid start-up scenario • Confinement at low rotation • Make rf H modes and Hybrids • Postpone NTM work
More ITER • Longer Term • Operating scenarios (steady state) • Diagnostic improvements (US) • Practice Remote participation • International Collaborations • Strong but “do it all” • Prioritize • More modeling from outside
