  3. Non-Pulsed Magnets at NHMFL-PFF available to Users • 20T SC (Zapf) • Dil-fridge, VSM, He3, Cp…. • Magnet failed in April ’08, replacement magnet to arrive in Dec ‘09 • 17T SC (Singleton) • Cantilever magnetometry, transport, He3, EPR • 15T RUS (Betts) • Resonant Ultrasound, He3 • 15T Staff Lab (Crooker/Jaime/McDonald) • Optics, Cp, EPR, He4 flow • 14T PPMS (Zapf) • VSM, Cp, transport, He4 flow • 7T Split Coil Optical Access (Crooker) • Optics, He4

  4. PFF Field Profiles

  5. User Support Staff • Fedor Balakirev (Electrical Transport) • Jon Betts (Resonant Ultrasound) • Scott Crooker (Optics) • Neil Harrison (Magnetization) • Marcelo Jaime (Heat Capacity) • Ross McDonald (GHz/RF and Torque Magnetometry) • Albert Migliori (Resonant Ultrasound) • Dwight Rickel (Pulse Echo Ultrasound) • John Singleton (Magnetization) • Chuck Swenson (Pulsed Magnet Design) • Vivien Zapf (Thermodynamics and Dielectrics)

  6. New Developments 2009 • 100T MS in User Ops mode • Replacement Insert Completed • 60T LP Fully Operation (to 55 T) • Very High Quality Data • TDO data is comparable to Hybrid (Sig:Noise) • Short Pulse Techniques Expanded • Cantilever measurements in L-He3 on a rotator! • L He-4 Consumption Addressed • Replacement 20T magnet and PPMS Recovery

  7. 60T Long Pulse Finely Tuned Techniques HTc Data from G. Lonzarich et al. Note: Data are Up and Down Sweeps at 1.2 K (no heating)

  8. Management Changes at LANL NHMFL-PFF • May: MPA-NHMFL GL took a new assignment at LANL • Acting Head of User Program • August: MPA-NHMFL and MPA-10 merged • New Group MPA-CMMS (Cond. Matt. Magnet Science) • New Group has a total of about 70 people • NHMFL-PFF Function and Mission UNCHANGED • Why do this? Answer = Better Management • September: Job Ad Released • http://www.hr.lanl.gov/JobListing/SingleJobAd.aspx?JobNumber=218413 • Will be advertised in Physics Today in Nov. & Dec. 2009
