  1. COMMUNITY INTEGRATION PROGRAM  for the well-being of people with developmental disabilities  

  2. Fornormalhumanbeings, conducting theirday-to-dayactivitiesisaformof livinglife. Howeverthereisasectionof peoplewhoareunabletodosowithout help. Eveniftheyareabletodoontheir own, itisaccompaniedwithgreatpain andlabor. Forsuchpeople, alsocalled disabledpeople, itisconvenientfortheir familiestolodgethemininstitutions againsttheirwishes – institutionswhich werebuiltprimarilytohelpthemandtake careofthembutintruthhaveevolvedto bebreedinggroundformaltreatment, abuseandneglect.

Peoplewithdevelopmentaldisabilityaretheoneswhohavelong- termmedicalproblemsthatcouldbeduetogeneticandprenatal issuesorpretermbirthwiththeeffectthatgoingthroughthedaily routineoflifealsobecomesamajorconcernforthemandtheir families. Theyarepeoplewhoeitherhavephysicalormental disabilitiesorhaveboth.   Communityintegrationistheprocessofbeingapartofthe communitywithself-dignitywhereeachandeverypersonenjoys certainrightsandliberties. Itistherightforallpeopleirrespectiveof theirmentalandphysicalhealth, race, caste, religion, sexorage.

Communityintegrationforpeoplewithdevelopmentaldisabilities revolvesaroundthisconceptthatdisabledpeopletoohaveequalrights toliveinacommunityjustlikeotherpeopleinsteadofbeinglockedup ininstitutionsunnecessarily. EventheUnitedNationshasrisenupto thiscauseandmanywesterncountriesliketheUnitedStatespassing lawshavepassedlawsthatprotecttherightofpeoplewithmentaland physicaldisabilities - lawsthatpermitdisabledpeopletoco-existinthe communityandnotbeinstitutionalizedforindefiniteperiod. Suchlaws helpsthecommunitytoacceptdevelopmentallydisabledpeopleas activemembersoftheircommunityandhelpthemliveundera supervisedcommunityintegrationprogramthatinvolvesequal opportunitiesofeducation, employment, housing, healthcareand recovery.

  5. Theprogramissetupina waythatpeoplewith developmentaldisabilities areabletousethelocal transportation, livein supportedapartmentsor speciallybuilthousingforthe disabled, accesslocalschools andhospitalsandenjoy financialindependence whentheygethiredby employerswhocreatejobs fordisabledpeople.

  6. Asthefirststeptowardsintegratingdisabledpeoplewith thecommunity, youngchildrenoradultswithspecial needscontinuetostaywiththeirparentsandfamily. However, manyoftheyoungstersfinditdifficulttodoso withpassingyears. Attimesitalsobecomesstressfulfor theageingparentstocarefortheirchildonacontinual basis. Insuchcases, grouphomesbecomeaviableoption ashousingforthedisabled. Sincethesehomeshavemany peoplewithsimilarspecialneedsresidinginonelocality, itprovestobetheperfectsettingforthemtogain confidenceandlivelifeontheirown.

  7. Someofthemalsooptforassisted livingfordevelopmentally disabledwheretheycanlivein theirownapartment, cooktheir ownfoodandreceiveassistance withregardstocertaindaily activitieslikebathing, cleaningthe house, gettingtheirdailydoseof medicinesandothersuch activities. Theseassisted apartmentshiretheservicesof unskilledorspecializedpeopleas perrequirementtodeliverthese services.

  8. Theprogramalsoconsistsof communityintegrationforseniors sothattheyareabletomoveout ofinstitutionsandnursinghomes andliveinthecommunity independentlywithdignityand enjoyequalrightsasotherpeople.  Theycouldchoosetolivein assistedhomesorotherwiseand areabletoaccessmedical resources, mealsetcaspartofthe communityintegrationprogram.
