  8. The Don Bosco Society in Sudan • Part of a worldwide network of educational institutions present in 130 countries • In Sudan for the past 25 years • Specialized in education for the youth, with focused attention to the poorest and marginalized

Saint Joseph’s VTCKHARTOUM • 850 students: mostly from the refugee camps around the capital & from a juvenile prison in the area • 60 staff • 8 different trades (masonry, auto-mechanics, carpentry, general mechanics, electricity, printing, welding, plumbing) • The VTC was established in the 1940s and was taken over by the Don Bosco Society in 1985

Saint Joseph Social Works KALAKALA GUBBA • Main site & 9 outstations located in a radius of 40 km • 5 primary schools with a total of 2000 students • Various social and development activities reaching yearly to 30.000 people (youth programs, trauma counseling, medical labs and dispensaries, women promotion programs)

  14. 3. Don Bosco VTC EL OBEYD • 650 students, mostly locals • 150 youngsters from Darfur, and 50 studentsfrom the Nuba Mountains(room & board provided) • 40 staff • 7 different trades(auto-mechanics, general mechanics, carpentry, welding, masonry, electricity, plumbing)

  22. Why Education? • It is the right of every child to receive an education • It is a precondition for a vibrant economy and sustainable process of development • It is a powerful means of supporting the peace process

Education implies: • Literacy Skills: Basic learning in numeracyand reading & writing • Livelihood Skills: Basic training in one of the following trades: masonry and construction; plumbing; electricity; carpentry; commercial agriculture • Life Skills:A holistic training in the following areas: conflict management; peace education; self-esteem building; interpersonal relations; responsible citizenship; entrepreneurship

  28. 1 2 Improve access to basic health care and educational services for the IDPs living in the squatter areas in the Kalakala locality of Khartoum. 3 Offer high quality job oriented professional training to IDPs in Khartoum by improving the standard at the St. Joseph VTC Facilitate the process of repatriation and resettlement of trained youth (IDPs) from Khartoum to South Sudan.
