  1. Essay Writing

  2. RTFQ! • Above anything else, read the full question • Read it again • What type of question is it? • 4 types—Description, Discussion, Evaluation, Comparison

  3. Description • You should give information on the topic without commenting on it. However at university level study, it is unlikely you will be asked only to describe an issue; it is often included in the initial part of a question. • You should always support the main facts with evidence or specific examples. Essays of this type use words such asDefine, describe, outline, explain, list, delineate, trace, state, summarize, present.

  4. Discussion • In this type of essay, you should give the main points on the topic, examine these and sometimes look at the implications. This essay requires you to support any comment by available evidence. Essays of this type use words such asAnalyze, explore, discuss, comment, illustrate, account for, interpret, review, explain, consider, debate, show how and examine.

  5. Evaluation • In this essay, you should choose material to develop a line of thought or argument. The academic convention is that you give both sides of the argument. You are usually asked to come to a conclusion and to back your view by discussing the evidence or reasoning. This is often thought to be the hardest type of essay. Essays of this type use words such asCriticize, evaluate, critically evaluate, justify, comment on, interpret.

  6. Comparison • In this essay, you are usually asked to find similarities or/and differences between different viewpoints, evidence or facts. Comparative essays can require description, discussion or evaluation, depending on what you have been asked to do. Essays of this type use words likeCompare, contrast, differentiate, distinguish, debate.

  7. Brainstorm/Write Outline • Throw as much information on the subject as you can down on a piece of paper • Analyze what you know • Come up with a plan

  8. Write Thesis Statement • The thesis is the first thing you should actually write as it will appear in your essay • Clear and concise • Normally last sentence of first paragraph • First paragraph (introduction) revolves around your thesis statement • DO NOT RESTATE THE QUESTION

  9. Get organized • Pull relevant information out of your brainstorming and outline the body of your essay • Every paragraph in the body of your essay should directly support your thesis statement • Draw the connection…don’t make the reader figure it out

  10. Conclusion • Paraphrase your main points • Why did you write this essay • Maybe save one big comment/opinion
