  2. Research – research your topic, make yourself an expert Analysis – analyze the documents and sources. What do they reveal? What conclusions do you come to? Thesis – Your argument Points to support your arguments – make a list of points to support your argument (each point will become a paragraph in the body of your essay) Introduction – Briefly explains your main points and states your thesis Conclusion – sums up your main point, restates your thesis, and concludes with an interesting point, comparison or quote Steps

  4. This is the main point summed up in one concise sentence Tells the reader where you’re going and why It should summarize what your essay is about Thesis

  5. You should come up with your main points to support your thesis Each point should be expanded upon and turned into a paragraph These paragraphs form the body of your essay Main point – the body

  6. Your introduction should be written after you have your thesis and the body completed As a general rule, each paragraph should be summarized in your introduction in, at least, one sentence Your thesis is in your introduction—usually the final sentence Introduction

  7. Your conclusion is similar to your introduction • Your essay is summarized (each paragraph represented by a paragraph or two) • Your thesis is restated, but reworded • Your conclusion should contain an interesting point, comparison or quote Conclusion

  8. Title should be creative, but appropriate Title should be centered Bottom right of title page: student name, homeroom, teacher name, due date, word count Title page

Format • Font: regular (i.e. New Times Roma, Arial) • Size: 10-12 • Spacing – double or 1.5 (do not single space) • Do not use the word “I” ( do not refer to yourself) • Do not use the word “you” (do not address the reader directly • Do not use contractions (would not – wouldn’t) • Do not use /, use the word or instead • Do not write “I think” (it’s weak) • Do not write “the sources tell me / teach me”—they state, reveal, describe, etc. Essay – formal writing

  10. Refer directly to your sources to explain where your information is from • Include a “Works Cited” page at the end of your essay • Include each source you have read or used • Format: • Author (last name, first name). Title in Italics. Date Citing sources
