  1. The Heat Box Results A model of the heat-box used to train short-term memory Time interval results Need Abstract Goes Here Figure 1 Alcohol has the largest death rate out of all other drugs Deaths From Disease Knowledge Base Olfactory training Short-term memory is stored in the α/β mushroom body neurons Disorders caused by alcohol have increased over the past 6 years Figure 3 Short Term Memory Alcohol This diagram shows the process of short term memory in the brain Figure 4 Literature Review Figure 5 This diagram shows how alcohol effects the brain LaFerriere, 07 Moore, 98 Comparison Between Control and chpd Drosophila Figure 7 Figure 8 Hypothesis Figure 6 This graph shows the results of the two different groups. The chpd flies’ short-term memory didn’t last as long as the control group Null Hypothesis: the ethanol exposure will have no effect on the short term memory of Drosophila melanogaster. Purpose Alternate Hypothesis: The Drosophila exposed to ethanol before training will have impaired memory and the flies exposed to alcohol after training will not have damaged memory. The control group will form short term memory The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the effects of alcohol exposure on short term memory in drosophila.

  2. Testing Chamber Training Chamber Flies are lowered between the familiar and unfamiliar scents and are given 4 minutes to choose Flies are shocked while simultaneously being being pumped an odor. Methodology Wild Type Drosophila Control N=950 Alcohol Before N=800 Alcohol After N=850 Trained using olfactory Exposed to Alcohol for 5 minutes Trained using olfactory Trained using olfactory Exposed to Alcohol for 5 minutes Tested 5 hours later Tested 5 hours later Tested 5 hours later Performance index used to see if learning occurred Performance Index: (Correct-Incorrect)-.5/.5 x100 Figure 9 Figure 10 Results Alcohol Before Control Alcohol After Figure 11 Figure 12 Results are put through the performance index with the flies that moved to the unfamiliar scent are correct and those that stayed in the middle or moved to the familiar scent were incorrect Results are put through the performance index with the flies that moved to the unfamiliar scent are correct and those that moved to the familiar scent were incorrect and those that stayed in the middle were discounted

  3. Alcohol Exposure Ethanol beaker Air pump Exposure chamber Figure 13 Flies are exposed to 200 Proof ethanol for 5 minutes before or after training Discussion The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the effects of alcohol exposure on short term memory in drosophila. Results demonstrated that alcohol exposure before and after had similar results. When graphed with out the undecided flies results appeared similar with the before and after groups varying by a slight percent Limitations Conclusion Data supported part of the alternate hypothesis which stated that the flies exposed to ethanol before training will have impaired memory. The number of trials for drosophila exposed to alcohol could have been higher and possible human errors. Future Studies Effects of alcohol on long term memory. Effects of sleep deprivation on short-term memory. Effects of resveratrol on short-term memory. Effects of alcohol on short-term memory in ADHD flies Bibliography Bayard, Max.
