CAEN Service Center (CSC) • On-campus computer repair facility • Convenient computer and laser printer repair for University departments, students, and employees • Fully authorized warranty repair facility for Macintosh, Dell, and Gateway • Also perform non-warranty repairs for the these brands and other brands • Located in 1404 Media Union April 2004

  4. Database & Application Design • 12 tables • All connect to the repair or repair_activity table • Web application code uses PHP, mySQL, and HTML April 2004

  7. Future • The Ideal: wrap the database into CoE/CAEN’s existing Oracle structure • DFE this summer: develop the database using JSP, Oracle and Zope content management system. Tasks: - gather feedback for functionality from staff - develop an information architecture for the web application - create the database tables in Oracle - code web pages using JSP - conduct usability testing of the completed pages - incorporate user feedback and results from usability tests April 2004

  8. Summary • The CAEN CSC has a functional, database-driven web application for tracking repairs. • Learned how to correctly design a database for efficiency and flexibility. • Starting a project from scratch is much easier than changing an existing database and application! April 2004
