Learning Intention We are learning how students in Grades 1-5 develop an understanding of how attributes are used to identify, describe, and classify shapes.
Success Criteria We know we are successful when we can describe how students in Grades 1-5 develop an understanding of how attributes are used to identify, describe, and classify shapes.
Grade 1 Progression 1.G.1 & 1.G.2 • Students reason about shapes • Describe & classify shapes using drawings, manipulatives & physical world objects in terms of their geometric attributes • Compose & decompose 2D & 3D plane and solid figures • Build understanding of part-whole relationships & properties of shapes
Grade 2 Progression 2.G.1 • Recognize & draw shapes by given attributes (sides & angles)
Please Consider: • What shape attributes will students need to know in order to sort these shapes? • What questions might you ask to guide your students in this task?
Grade 3 Progression 3.G.1 • Analyze, compare & classify shapes by their properties • Draw shapes with specific attributes • Investigate, describe & reason about decomposing & composing polygons to make other polygons • Reason about congruence & symmetry • Make & test conjectures
Grade 4 Progression 4.G.2 • Describe, analyze, compare & classify 2D shapes by their related geometric properties of perpendicularity & parallelism • Form richer concept images connected to verbal definitions associated with geometric ideas • See points & lines as abstract objects
Please Consider: • What other names can you give a square? How do you know? • What relationship does your diagram show between quadrilaterals? • What properties did you consider when you placed the shapes in the diagram?
Read the Progression for Grade 5p. 17 5.G.3 & 5.G.4 • Analyze & relate categories of 2D & 3D shapes by their properties into hierarchies • Relate certain categories of shapes as subclasses of other categories
