  2. Workshop Objectives 1. Determine needs and concerns 2. Review the EDST comprehensive policy 3. Explore options for the format of the exams 4. Review some examples 5. Begin to plan

  3. The Comps: A Road Frequently Travelled • Make sure you have fuel for the journey • Watch for wrong turns & falling rock • Plan for curves in the road • Take it slow • Park your car downhill • Break for dips • Celebrate when done

  4. EDST Comps Policy Two lens: • A test of student’s knowledge • An exam of the theoretical and methodological aspects of a thesis

  5. EDST COMPS POLICY • The comprehensive is a wide mental grasp that goes beyond isolated bits & pieces • Students are expected to complete comps end of 2nd year (24 months) • UBC requires students to reach candidacy by end of 3rd year (36 months) • 3 exams/papers written over 3 months

  6. Preparing for the comps 1. Form your committee 2. Determine your research territory 3. Negotiate exam foci and associated literature to review 4. Set exam questions 5. Decide on format, length 5. Decide on date of exam

  7. Following the comps • meet with committee within 3 weeks after completion • provide brief summary of each paper* • listen to committee’s feedback (pass, requires minor revision, fail) • audio record (with permission) meeting and prepare summary memo* • revise, if required • move onto to next step: publish papers/proposal * My recommendations

  8. A student-led, student-centred process…. • The goal is for the student to take ownership of the papers they write, to show that they can develop independent scholarship • Consultation with committee when preparing for comps but no feedback on drafts of comps during the process • Goal is to develop student self-reliance and independent scholarship
