Myths • If I maintain healthy eating and exercise habits, I’ll never experience heart disease. • There’s no history of heart disease in my family, so I needn’t worry. • I’m 65 and have never had heart issues, so I guess I never will. • I’m a woman. Heart disease affects men. I don’t need to worry.

  3. Facts • 1.5 million Americans suffer from heart disease • Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the U.S., causing more than 600,000 deaths per year. • One American every 39 seconds dies of heart disease • Heart disease claims more lives each year than cancer, respiratory diseases, and accidents combined.

  4. Causes / Risk Factors • The Unholy Trinity: • High Blood Pressure (Hypertension or HTN) • Cholesterol • Diabetes • Controlled vs. Uncontrolled • Heredity • Race • Smoking • Stress • Obesity • Low or non-existent exercise level

MI Warning Signs • What is an MI? • Myocardial Infarction or Heart Attack • What are some of the warning signs? • Chest Discomfort: Pressure, Squeezing, Fullness or Pain • Other Upper Body Discomfort: Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach • Shortness of Breath: May occur with or without chest discomfort • Fatigue • Other Signs: Breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness

  7. MI vs. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) • MI is when blood flow to the heart is blocked, and SCA is when the heart malfunctions and suddenly stops beating unexpectedly. • MI is a “circulation” problem and SCA is an “electrical” problem. • SCA is far more time sensitive, every second counts

  8. Prevention • Diet / Eating Habits • Sodium reduction primary • Exercise • Per doctor’s recommendation • Quit Smoking • Reduce alcohol intake • Check ups – Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, EKG’s

  9. Treatment • CPR / AED • Angiography / Angioplasty • Advances in Angioplasty • AFIB • Medication, Ablation, Electrical Cardioversion • Bypass / Valve Replacement • Advances in Bypass / Valve Replacement Surgery
