  1. OPENING SEQUENCE:Action SPECTRE

  2. Spectre • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9LxUQL_Ucg&ab_channel=FlicksAndTheCityClips

  3. narrative • Opening scene is a man in a suit, he is in a helicopter looking at a ring with a spider or octopus logo on it – assume is is the protagonist as he is the only man in the shot and is the first character we are introduced to- it focuses and zooms in on the logo on the ring signifying • Then we see the male (Bond) shirtless surround by naked women dancing and praising him- them being shirtless feeds into women/male gaze attracting the audience as they sexualize the characters by focusing on their different body pats- it also suggest that the male gets a lot of female attention in the narrative as he is surrounded by them • Focus on a man and women falling- connote a relationship between the the two of them they are also surrounded by fire which could be symbolic to death or hell and them falling could connote falling into hell • Then the next shot is and man and women making out with each other- displays the sexual relationship and tension of the couple in the narrative, could have been the same man and women who were falling in the previous shot • The are close ups and full shots of a naked women with an octopus leg wrapped around her- octopus could be the logo that was on show that the logo could be involved • The is a shot of the effect glass shattering or light refracting and dust/fog through it we see different peoples faces- this could be important to the narrative as they could be vital characters that we meet in the movie and play an important role and it creates enigma of who these people are and why they are here.- we see a girl who vanishes into dust could connote she has dies • We see the octopus again and lots of people standing around it and in-between the legs- shows this is important to the narrative as the motif has been repeated lots of time through the sequence-the head of the octopus is replaced with a skull connoting death that will happen in this movie • Then there is a skull made of fire burning paper or it could be destroying evidence- skull and fire connote hell, evil and death • Then a close up of Bond holding a gun- connoting violence and action- the octopus wraps round the gun showing it trying to stop him from using the gun – this could show how the octopus is the symbol for the opposite team bond fights against. • A scene where there is a room with a long table and men sitting all around it made of smoke/fog and you cant see their faces and the man sitting at the head of the table has the octopus surrounding his head showing that he could be head of the corporation • Lots of repeated motifs or fire, the ring the octopus, Bond and women showing that they will be important to the narrative of the story and will be main themes of the movie.

  4. Target Audience • 20- 55 year old • Male • White • Rich – middle to upper class • Middle-aged • Male based- due to action, gadgets, fighting and lots of women gaze

  5. Key convention for Action • Hero (Bond) who fights evil and the villain (people apart of the corporation of the octopus logo which is on the ring • Violence and weapons- Man with the gun and shots being fired • Explosions and fire- fire used as background surround the characters • Death- lots of symbolic imaging of skull connoting death • Power- shown through the characters and the men • Romantic Couple- between bond and lots of women shown theough the man always surrounded by women

  6. Key Moments Camera Work sound • Extre close up of the ring into a zoom in of the ring- this shows that the logo on the ring of the octopus is relevant and very important as the image is repeated through the scene with close up and medium shots • Non- diegetic sound of ‘the writing on the wall’ is playing through the whole opening sequence - the lyrics fit into the the opening as it talk about risking it all linking to death and losing a love one and action movies are all about risks

  7. Key moments editing • Montage of Bond with women sexually – connotes the relationships he has in the movie • Superimposition of the fire which could symbolize death and octopus which is the logo of the evil coporation so the fact that they are imposed together due to there similar connotations.

  8. Conclusion • I think it is a successful as it portrays the key codes and convention of Genre as it has all the element of an action movie within the 3 mins of the opening sequence • It was also a successful as it shows us the key elements and motif of the movie through the opening sequence by using symbolism like Bond, Octopus, the girls and mysterious evil man. • It also set up a few enigmas and action codes so it makes the audience want to watch the rest of the movie to see if those enigmas and action get answered
