  1. Essence of Wood: Western Red Cedar Do you know these small objects that we place in the wardrobes to protect themselves from moths, these little insects that love to taste our clothes? These repellent objects are made from wood scraps in Western Red Cedar (The Red Cedar of Canada) which is a traditional and natural moth repellent which cannot bear the smell. This essence, well known for its delicate smell, is widely used in construction because of its many qualities. If you have a facade siding or interior wall siding project, and you love the beautiful and naturally durable, go with Western Red Cedar. Its characteristics combining nobility, aesthetics, and natural durability are all assets for an exceptional achievement.

  2. What is Western Red Cedar? Western Red Cedar is recognized as Canada's finest and most durable species. It is a slow-growing softwood from forests with a harsh climate, and with many qualities: Nobility with its unique color variations Naturally durable: does not require any preservation Resistant: to most xylophagous insects Aesthetics: magnificent silver gray patina that settles with aging ● ● ● ● Origin Western Red Cedar is the common name of the botanical species Thuja plicata which belongs to the Cupressaceae family. It is mainly present between the 39th and the 57th degree of north latitude, and especially present in British Columbia, province of the west coast of Canada. They are found north of this region to Alaska and south to California. The tree also grows west of the Cascade Mountains in humid forests along the favorable climate coastal region which is also a premier ecological reserve. It is a species that is the subject of careful silviculture because it is a precious resource, valued and appreciated all over the world. Dimensional characteristics The Western Red Cedar is a tree that has a strong taper, and can reach a height of 70 meters and a diameter of 4 meters in circumference at human height. In areas less conducive to its development, the average height is 25 to 40 meters for a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 meters. Lightness Red Cedar is a naturally strong and very light wood, but which exhibits good dimensional stability. It is a low density wood with an average density of 370 kg / m3, which also helps to improve thermal insulation from the outside. This is the preferred essence of realizations aiming to limit weight, such as tiny-houses for example. Natural insect repellent Red Cedar has a self-protective capacity against mold and insects, a guarantee of incomparable durability. Extremely resistant to insect attack, Red Cedar contains essential oils that act as protection against insects and fungi. Therefore, it does not need special treatment. Western Red Cedar can therefore be exposed to humidity without fear of mold, it is classified as class 3.2 according to standard NF EN 335.

  3. Durability The wood of Western Red Cedar has a durable heartwood (natural durability class II) that is a longevity of more than 50 years used in cladding. Thanks to the essential oils it contains, Western Red Cedar naturally resists microbial attack and has fungicidal properties. It is durable (if purged of sapwood) outdoors, and out of contact with the ground, it is as durable as treated wood. San Group guarantees it for 25 years outdoors. Types of jobs Western Red Cedar is the ideal material for demanding constructions. Soft wood is used in wall cladding, in vertical or horizontal applications (Cladding, Paneling). With excellent dimensional stability, its intrinsic qualities mean that it does not require finishing. Western Red Cedar also has acoustic properties that limit the transfer of sound vibrations and can thus help soundproof rooms in the house. Installed in cladding, it contributes to insulation.
