The Neka Art Museum was opened in 1982 and is named after a Balinese teacher Suteja Neka who collected paintings as a means of artistic documentation. Nowadays the museum has a great selection of works from many famous Balinese artists and expats who have lived here and influenced local artists.

Suteja Neka (by Arie Smit)Founder and Director Neka Art Museum Ubud The Neka Art Museum was opened in 1982 and is named after a Balinese teacher Suteja Neka who collected paintings as a means of artistic documentation. Nowadays the museum has a great selection of works from many famous Balinese artists and expats who have lived here and influenced local artists.

  4. Adrianus Wilhelmus (Arie) Smit (born April 15, 1916) is a Dutch-born Indonesian painter living on Bali. Since his arrival in Bali, Smit moved some 40 times, "to see what is beyond the next hill". He stayed longest in his favorite areas of Karangasem and Buleleng. He finally settled near Ubud in the village of Sanggingan under the patronage of Pande Suteja Neka, founder of the Neka Museum. In recognition for his role in the development of painting on the island, Smit received the Dharma Kusuma (Society of National Heroes) award in 1992 from the government of Bali. The Arie Smit Pavilion was opened at the Neka Art Museum in 1994 to display his works and those of contemporary Balinese artists. The Museum Bali in Denpasar and the Penang Museum in Malaysia also have collections of his work. Smit further had exhibits in Jakarta, Singapore, Honolulu and Tokyo.

  18. These houses were seen by the artist in the town of Cideng in West Java. They once were part of a heavily guarded and fenced detainment camp used for housing thousand of Dutch women and children from 1942 to 1946 during the Japanese occupation of the Netherlands Indies (Indonesia) in WW II. The artist, who was taken as a prisoner of war, survived his ordeal and decided not to focus on his terrible experience and instead showed the joy of life in this simple yet powerful work.
