  • Started in late 1970s
  • Expanded in 1980s, early 1990s, corresponding with rising employer costs
  • Currently 80 coalitions, in 41 states
  • 7,000 participating employers, 25 million lives

What is the relevance of HIEs to the Coalition/Employer Community?
  • Both have clear focus on health system reform at the community level.
  • Some high level understanding that HIT infrastructure has potential to enable higher quality, greater efficiency and population care management. But where is the evidence?
  • And will HIEs become a community based infrastructure to support the value based purchasing agenda of coalitions/employers?
  • Unanswered questions- multi-stakeholder dialogue needed.
