Human Resource Development • 45 Undergraduate Bursary students(86% of DG) • 35 Postgraduate Bursary students(85% of DG) • 15 Scholarships have been issued • 30 University of Technology training students(100% of DG) • Grade 11-12 Girls’ Programme (15 learners from Limpopo supported) • 12 Mintek Fellows, 7 DST Researcher Development Fellows • Innovation fund, THRIP and other industry funds are used to leverage the number of post-graduates. • Suports the EduMap Programme(65 learners, 100% HDSA) • Adopted a school - Kwadeda in Zola (Soweto), Diepsloot • ASSM Training School (MQA)(800 learners, 100% HDSA)

R&D Highlights - gold Project AuTEK: • Gold-based catalysts reach product development stage • Biomedical & Nanotechnology programmes broadened • First Phase of the state of the art Nanotechnology Characterisation Laboratory has been completed • Considerable support from NRF (THRIP) and DST • Cyanide monitoring on gold plants in Africa. • THRIP project on environmental aspects of cyanide usage

R&D Highlights - PGMs • Conroast smelting for PGM smelting of high Cr concentrates • Autocatalysts recycling project (Innovation Fund) • New uses for Palladium (DST) • High temperature platinum based superalloys (DST, Mining Houses) • Testwork to support feasibility studies for several new mining projects. • Flotation controlimplemented in SA, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mexico, South America and Australia. • Recovery of PGMs from revert tailings

R&D Highlights - ferrous metals • Smelting testwork for Shevchenko FeNi project (Kazakhstan) • Industrial-scale trials of low-nickel stainless steel (Innovation Fund project) • Negotiations to introduce ‘smart’ rockbolt in mining industry • Industrial trials of Aluminium grain refiners (aluminothermic production route) • Research into the production of a saleable Ti slag from BC magnetites (potential resource 2X global) • Assessment of Voskhod FeCr project (Russia) • Assessment of iron making technologies (gas & coal based) for several SA and African “prospects”.
