  1. Color Theory

  2. What is Color ? Color is caused by different kinds of light being reflected or absorbed by objects. To see color, you have to have light. When light shines on an object some colors bounce off the object and other colors are absorbed by it. Our eyes only see the colors that are bounced off or reflected. The sun’s rays contain all the colors of the rainbow mixed together. This mixture is called white light. What happens to the white light when you shine it through a prism ? Neat fact: While artists think black is a color, scientists don’t because black is the absence of all color.

  3. There are different kinds of names for different color combinations. Grey Scale Primary Secondary Complimentary

  4. PrimaryColors • Primary colors are the first colors • Primary colors can’t be mixed from any other colors • All other colors can be made from the Primary colors plus a little black and white.

  5. SECONDARYCOLOR • Secondary colors are made by mixing 2 primary colors together. • Why do you think these colors are called Secondary ? Blueand Yellow =Green Orange = RedandYellow RedandBlue =Violet

  6. TertiaryColors • Each tertiary color has 2 names. Example: Yellow-Green • Tertiary colors are placed between the primary and secondary colors on the color wheel. • If primary means first, secondary second, what do you think tertiary means ?

  7. Analogous Colors • Analogous Colors are the colors next to each other on the color wheel. • An Analogous color set includes a primary, secondary, and tertiary color. • Each Analogous color set has 2-5 colors in it. • What would be an example of an Analogous color set ? How are these colors related to each other ?

  8. TintandShade -To create a Tint add a little color to white Example: Adding white to red to create _?_. -To create a Shade add a little black to a color Example: adding black to an orange creates _?_.

  9. Complementary Colors • Complementary colors are pairs of colors opposite or diagonal to each other on the color wheel. • If these colors are mixed in equal amounts they will create a neutral color like brown or brownish-grey. • Complimentary colors are used to contrast, enhance or intensify each other. • A little bit of complimentary color in it’s compliment goes a long way !

  10. MonochromaticColors • Mono = One Chroma = Color • A Monochromatic color scheme is a single color and it’s shades and tints. • The energy of a monochromatic artwork is more subtle and peaceful because of the limited use of color. • Monochromatic color schemes may be considered boring unless there is a lot of different things going on in the design. • Example: Different shapes or lines

  11. Neutral colors are not seen on most color wheels. • Black, gray, whites are neutral. • Browns, beiges and tans are sometimes neutral too. • Neutral colors can be made by mixing: • black and white • or • the complementary colors • or • all three primaries together (plus some black or white) NeutralColors
