  5. Language promotion • Languageskills are not a pre-condition to take part in a project. Anyyoungpersonwhoisinterested in a projectcantake part • Our aim : increasinglanguageawareness and languageskills. The youth exchange is the context, and the bettercooperationbetween the two states is the aim • Languagelearningduring a youth meeting is not comparable to formallanguagelearning in an educational institution: • Non-formaleducation. Young graduatesattendingour tandem language courses have • Personal expectations towardstheircareer • Heterogeneouslanguageskills (A2 to C2) • Heterogeneousprofessional profiles (bookstore, history, fine arts…) • High knowledgelevel and selfconfidence in their business • More or lessinterculturalawareness • Large expectations for the time after the course. The requirements of the tandem language course are • Language/intercultural courses spanningtwoweeks (for editors) or threeweeks (for museumcurators and translators) • The course isdonepartly in Germany and partly in France • All participants staytogether in a hostelduring the whole course • Twotutors, one French and one Germanaccompany the course • 5 hours/day : guided tandem learning • Organisation of meetings withprofessionalsand visits to institutions First international Meeting on languagelearning in Tandem – Miami – 28.02.2014

The challenges • Participants come with high expectations of personaldevelopment • Theiridea about languagelearningis not alwaysskilloriented • Sometimesveryunrealistic expectations about whattheycanachieve in the short time • They are not aware of the (real) purposebehind the project : connecting people for a united states of Europe • Personalaims are not totalyequal to institutionalaims First international Meeting on languagelearning in Tandem – Miami – 28.02.2014

More challenges • To understand the tandem approach and beready to workwith a partnereveryday • Beingable to give as much as youreceive • False expectations towards the tutors • To define in detailtheirpersonallearning objectives • Is Tandem seriousenough ? Some solutions to challenges faced • Introduction to tandem • Providespecifictasks • Use simulations as preparation for the professional situation (the path of creating a book, organizing an exhibition) • Individual coaching (Lernberatung) especially for the learningprocess • Mononationalworking groups for some questions likegrammatic First international Meeting on languagelearning in Tandem – Miami – 28.02.2014

Assessment ? • Complementarity of all moments during the course, but veryintensiv • « breaks are not real breaks becausewe continue speaking and working all the time, I know thatis the intention, but itissoexhausting » • Sometime the feeling of successiscomingduring the free time • « I realised all that I hadlearned, as I was able to have a deep conversation withother participants » • General feeling of increasedskillsat the end of the course by almost all participants • Very good group atmosphereat the end of the course : Community feeling • After the professionalstay : Increasedawareness about ownstrategiesto learn a langage First international Meeting on languagelearning in Tandem – Miami – 28.02.2014
