  1. Building a parish vision of Youth ministry A quick overview of the USCCB document “Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Youth Ministry” (1997)

  2. Resources NDC-National Directory for Catechesis (2005) RTV- Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry (1997)

  3. Audience of youth ministry “In general youth catechesis is directed to adolescents from about the age of 11 or 12 to 18 or 19. In each of these situations, however, adolescent catechesis is most effective when situated within a comprehensive program of youth ministry that includes social, liturgical and catechetical components as well as opportunities for service.” (NDC, 264)

  4. Definition “Youth ministry is the response of the Christian community to the needs of young people and the sharing of the unique gifts of youth with the larger community” A Vision of Youth Ministry, pg. 6

  5. Three Goals Goal 1: to empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today Goal 2: To draw young people to responsible participation in the life mission, and work of the Church faith community Goal 3: To foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person

  6. Goal 1-Discipleship “All ministry with adolescents must be directed toward presenting young people with the Good News of Jesus Christ and inviting and challenging them to become disciples” (RTV, 10). “Young people need to know and be known by the Church’s ministers if they are to better understand how God is calling them to live as disciples. Faith-filled example by these ministers and active encouragement and invitations to consider a vocation to the priesthood and consecrated life will enable more to respond” (RTV, 11). “Growth in discipleship…is the goal of all our efforts” (RTV, 11).

  7. Goal 2-Catholic Faith Community “Young people experience the Catholic community of faith at home, in the parish (especially in youth ministry programs), in Catholic schools, and other organizations serving youth” (RTV, 11).

  8. Goal 2-Catholic Faith Communities: ParishesThree roles of the parish Parishes “should be a place where [young people] are welcomed, grow in Jesus, and minister side by side with adults of the community” Parishes “should have programs for [young people] that recognize [their] special talents and role in the life of the Church. [They] bring to the parish community youthfulness, energy, vitality, hopefulness, and vision” If parishes are to be worthy of the loyalty and active participation of youth, they will need to become “youth friendly” communities in which youth have a conspicuous presence in the parish (RTV, 13)

  9. Goal 3-Wholeness and Holiness The Church’s ministry with adolescents seeks to: “Guide young people in the call to holiness by developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ by meeting him in the Scriptures, in the life and teachings of the Church, and in their own prayer lives” (RTV, 16). N. B. Please read this entire section for it is rich, but for the sake of brevity only one bullet of many is listed

  10. Seven themes Developmentally appropriate Family friendly Intergenerational Multicultural Community-wide collaboration Leadership Flexible and adaptable programming RTV pgs. 20-25

  11. Components of a Comprehensive Ministry • Advocacy • Catechesis • Faith themes for younger adolescents • Faith themes for older adolescence • Community Life • Evangelization

  12. Components (cont.) Justice and Service Leadership Development Pastoral Care Prayer and Worship (RTV, 26-47)

  13. Concluding thought “The Church and world need the faith, gifts, energy and fresh ideas of young people. The entire Church, and in a special way ministry with adolescents, must empower young people for their mission in the world” (RTV, 50)
