Lawsoniaintracellularisdemonstrated Increasedprevalence of hemorrhagicdiarrhea in fatteners Brachyspiragroup III demonstrated in 7/20 samples. Brachyspirahyodysenteriae NOT demonstrated Eradication program June-October 1999 2013 2011 1995 1997 1999 2001 2003 2005 2007 2009 Regular samplings for Brachyspiraspp. Conversion from specializedfatteningproduction to a farrow-to-finishherd Hemorrhagicdiarrhea in sows & growers • Eradication program • Sale of surplus growers (treated with 80 ppm tiamulin for 6 days) • Sowstreated with an injection of tiamulin (10 mg/kg) followed by • water medication with 120 ppm tiamulin for 11 days • Cleaning & disinfection • - Removal of slats, manurepitsemptied • - Manureremoved from yard surfaces • - Pressure-wash, drying & disinfection with glutaraldehyde • Sowsmoved to cleaned and disinfectedunits • - Sowscleaned & disinfected • - 2nd tiamulininjection (10 mg/kg) on allocation • - Water medicationcontinued for 3 days after allocation • Enforcedrodentcontrol • Dogs & cats water medicated with tiamulin Conclusions The eradication program for swinedysenteryproved to be successfulbutcompleteeradication of otherBrachyspiraspp. was not achieved. NeitherwasLawsoniaintracellulariseradicatedalthoughtiamulin is effective for treatingproliferativeenteropathy.
