  2. Definition of Deciduous • The word "Deciduous" means "falling off or out at a certain season”. Deciduous forest means a forest in which the leaves fall off the trees when the winter comes.

  3. Animals Deciduous forests contain many animals • Coyotes live in the forest and can weigh from 15- 44 lbs. Their tails are 12 – 16 inches long with a body of 30 to 40 inches long, and are 15 to 20 inches tall with fur that is grayish, tan with pointed nose and large ears. • The Eastern Chipmunk can be found in the biome of a deciduous forest. It is brownish in color. The head is marked with two stripes above and below legs. Its ears are short, rounded and stick straight up to heat its predators. Its belly and sides are white. The tail is straight and this helps with its balance. • The White tailed deer is another animal that lives in the forest. Its fur is a grayish white color, but changes in winter to red. There are markings of white fur behind the nose, eyes, ears, neck, under the legs and tail.

  4. plants There are many plants like. • The White Oak tree can grow from 80 to 100 feet tall ,3 to 4 feet in diameter around the trunk and can spread from 50 to 80 feet. The Oak tree grows upright and its bark is whitish gray . The life span of the Oak tree, if undisturbed is 500 to 600 years old. The Oak tree's leaves have 7 to 9 rounded points which resemble finger like lobes. • There are pecan trees The pecan tree can grow to enormous heights, sometimes to heights of 180 feet, and has an upright growing pattern. The bark is pale gray or whitish brown, scaly, and deeply furrowed. The bark on the pecan tree is rough and scaly, and is pale grey or brown. The heartwood is solid brown and black. • There are Northern Arrow-wood These plants have dark green, oval deciduous leaves which grow opposite each other on the stem. The tips of the leaves are pointed and the bottoms are rounded or heart shaped. The leaves are about 4 inches long and 3 inches across. Northern Arrow-wood leaves have big spiky edges, but its surface is smooth.

  5. The A biotic of Deciduous Forest • Deciduous forest climate is effected by the latitude that it is found in. • Most deciduous forests are found in the latitude range of 23 degrees North to 38 degrees south. • Most have 4 seasons : Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring.

  6. Rainfall • The rainfall is effected by the fact that most deciduous forests are on mountains and near the sea. • As the cloud rises over the mountain it will drop rain on the forest. • Rainfall in Winter is on average 14 inches. • In Summer the rain increases to 18 inches due to higher humidity rates.

  7. Average Temperature • The temperature is affected by its latitude and by the season. • Average temperature in Summer is 70 degrees Fahrenheit. • Winter months are colder with snow and frost with an average temperature below Zero degrees Fahrenheit.

  8. Natural resources of deciduous forests • The resources found in the forest is the timber. • Lumber and lumber by products. • Wood for building and the paper industry. • Nuts Fruits and Syrup.

  9. Issues • Global warning has heated up the planet and the deciduous forests cannot survive the warmer winters and are dying. • Acid rain is also destroying the eco system poisoning the trees. • Lumber companies are cutting down too many trees for the paper industry and the building trade.

  10. Issues • The timber companies are replanting much faster growing coniferous trees which do not shed their leaves. • These coniferous forests are changing the biome because the animals cannot live on their leaves. • The timber companies are making deserts out of the forests because they are cutting too many trees down causing soil erosion and mud slides.

  12. words that are hard Bark = the outside of the tree trunk. Furrows= long lines or grooves in something. Humidity= is hot air that is full of water. Lumber= is another word for timber. Coniferous = is another form of tree that does not drop its leaves pine trees are a type of coniferous trees. erosion = the breakdown of rocks or soil by the weather, the wind or the rain.

  13. Words that are hard Temper = a process that heats up glass so that it becomes strong and does not break. Latitude =is the invisible lines that circle the earth that divide the earth with degrees that can be used to measure the location of places on the ea
