County Safety Plan Meetings ATP 6 March 2010 Office of Traffic Safety Minnesota Department of Public Safety
Motor Vehicle Crashes = Leading Cause of Death (Ages 1-34) • 93% of deaths are a result of driver behavior • 34% are due to road factors • 12% are a result of the driver’s vehicle • Combination of these factors contribute to crashes.
Basic Behavioral Strategies • Pairing education with enforcement • Education alone will not change behavior • Enforcement alone will not change behavior for very long • “Popular” choices are often not effective • Improve driver’s education • Public information campaigns • Handouts and give-aways • Enforcement Tools • Laws
Programs through Office of Traffic Safety • Safe and Sober- (aggressive overtime traffic safety enforcement) • HEAT (High Enforcement of Aggressive/Speed Traffic) • TZD Safe Roads (Safe Communities Coalitions) • Night CAP (Concentrated Alcohol Patrol) • DWI Courts and Court Monitoring • Alternative Rides Home • Communications tools • publicizing enforcement with news releases, media kits, posters • Worksite policies or trainings • server training • policies on texting/cell phone use/speeding/seatbelts/alcohol
