  1. VIRTUAL INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE ENVIRONMENT FRAMEWORKIP-FP6- 507173

  2. VIKEF OVERVIEW • 14 Partners Consortium + EC From 8 countries • 5 Research Centres From Norway to Spain • 3 Universities From Italy to Ireland • 6 SMEs • 36 months duration (April 1st 2004 - March 31st 2007) • 10 Mio. Euro budget • 1.000 person months effort

  3. VIKEF OBJECTIVES • To develop an advanced software framework for enabling the integrated development of semantic-based Information, Content, and Knowledge (ICK) management systems. • To develop an exemplary sectoral KVC application solution based on this framework providing semantic-enabled community services for the scientific and for the business domain. • To provide semantic web solutions & technologies to stakeholders who can foster its future usage and adequate exploitation.

  4. Work Package Structure 1st Review ISP-1 ISP-2 ISP-3 WP6: Basic Semantic enabled Community services WP10: Advanced Semantic enabled Community services WP5: Representation & Management of Semantic Information WP8: Context and Interoperability WP11: 2nd Integration Prototype “Smart Community Support” WP7: 1st Integration Prototype “Smart Content Factory” WP1: VIKEF Requirement Analysis WP2: Core VIKEF Infrastructure Development WP4: Basic Methods for Semi-automatic Content Annotation WP9: Advanced Methods for Semi-automatic, semantic Content Annotation WP3: Acquisition & Harmonization Support WP12: Project Management WP13: Project Assessment and Evaluation WP14: Training WP15: Dissemination and Exploitation WP16: Demonstration

  5. VIKEF SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES SCIENTIFIC WORKPACKAGES (1) WP 1 – VIKEF Requirement Analysis Goal:to collect the requirements for the VIKEF Framework in close cooperation between the potential users of the framework and the scientific partners WP 2 – Core VIKEF Infrastructure Development Goal:Design and Development of a core infrastructure for the VIKE-Framework as a basis for the development and communication of the framework and for the sound integration WP 3 – Content and Knowledge Acquisition and Harmonization Support Goal:Development of components for the import and harmonization of the selected content and knowledge resources. WP 4 – Basic Methods for semi-automatic Content Annotation Goal: Development of components implementing basic functionality for the semi-automatic annotation of linguistic and multimedia content WP 5 – Representation and Management of Semantic Information Goal:The Development of an integrated component for the management of semantic information in the form of RDF models, and development of a component for taxonomies management

  6. VIKEF SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES • SCIENTIFIC WORKPACKAGES (2) • WP6 – Basic semantic-enabled community services • Goal:Development of a basic set of community services that reuse the semi-automatically extracted semantics to provide more effective and intelligent services to members of communities • WP 7 - Integration Prototype “Smart Content Factory” • Goal:to build up a “smart content factory” prototype that “produces” smart (enriched) content from business and scientific content WP 8 – Context and Interoperability Goal:Supporting semantic representation as well as context and interoperability in virtual information and knowledge environments • WP 9 – Advanced Methods for semi-automatic, semantic Content Annotation • Goal:The conceptualisation of foundational research (models & methods) and development of methods for the semantic annotation of textual and multimedia content • WP 10 – Advanced semantic-enabled Community Services • Goal:The Development of an advanced set of community services that fully reuse the semi-automatically extracted semantics to provide more effective and intelligent services to members of communities • WP 11 – Integration Prototype “Smart Community Support” • Goal: Showcasing the virtual information and knowledge environments that are enabled by the flexible integration of the overall project results into the VIKEF

  7. DISSEMINATION Objectives: • promote awareness raising • increase understanding of the VIKEF outcomes • foster the development of research activities Target audience: • The European scientific community • Standardization bodies in fields related to the scope of VIKEF • Software developers in the field of Knowledge based systems • Market actors and institutions in the Scientific Congress and Trade Fairs industries.
