  10. 2 Questions • Who rejoiced? • Why did they rejoice? We will find that Luke is really, in many ways, the gospel of joy!

  11. Who rejoiced? The parents of John the Baptist (Lk 1) – at John’s birth [John] will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. – Lk 1.14-15a

  12. Who rejoiced? Mary (Lk 1) – at the announcement from Gabriel And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed – Lk 1.46-48

  13. Who rejoiced? Neighbors and relatives (Lk 1) – at the birth of John the Baptist Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy. Lk 1.46-48

  14. Who rejoiced? • Angels (Lk 2) – at Jesus’ birth Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” – Lk 2.13-14

  15. Who rejoiced? • Those persecuted (Lk 6) – called on to rejoice when defamed • Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets. – Lk 6.23

  16. Who rejoiced? Jesus (Lk 10) – while teaching his disciples At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. Lk 10.21

  17. Who rejoiced? Jesus’ disciples – as they evangelized “He who listens to you listens to me...” The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” – Lk 10.15-17

  18. Who rejoiced? Crowd of disciples – at Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” – Lk 19.37-38

  19. Jesus came to Jerusalem…Tips for the ‘Holy Week’ • Taking more time to pray • Reflecting on how God reached out to us and how our hearts changed • Remembering how God has been faithful to us always • Remembering that the Cross is our #1 motivation for being a Christian

  20. Who rejoiced? Disciples – when Jesus was raised from the dead When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” – Lk 24.30-33

  21. Who rejoiced? Disciples – when Jesus was raised from the dead When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, - Lk 24.40

  22. Who rejoiced? Disciples (Lk 24) – at the Ascension When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God – Lk 24.50-53

  23. Conclusions • Luke presents Jesus’ ministry as a ministry of joy. We can strive to become this kind of ministry as well • Different kinds of people rejoiced (maidens, neighbors, disciples, rich people), even angels! • Their joy was a deep kind of joy – the joy of the spiritual kind.
