  2. Stretches across northern Africa from Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea Largest desert in the world Only inhabitable in oasis areas The desert divides the continent into two regions: North Africa, and Sub Saharan Africa The Sahara Desert

  3. A belt of dry grasslands along the southern edge of the Sahara. It runs through 12 countries It is semiarid- more rainfall than a desert, but still very little Droughts are causing this land to become increasingly more desert like. This is known as desertification. It is an environmental concern for the region. The Sahel

  4. Rainforests border the equator on either side, but the areas north and south of those rainforests are savannas. Savannas are hot dry grasslands. The soil is rich, but farming is limited because of crop damaging insects. Home to many wild animals. The Savannas

  5. Along the equator in the Congo Basin lies the 2nd largest rainforest in the world. (Amazon is #1) A tropical rainforest is a forest close to the equator that averages over 70 inches of rain a year. Home to thousands of different plants and animals. Tropical Rainforests

  6. Stretches across much of southwestern Africa Covers 100,000 square miles Unlike the Sahara, grass, shrubs, and a number of wild animals manage to live in the Kalahari desert thanks to underground water supplies. The Kalahari desert

  7. **Think CNN- Congo, Nile, & Niger- then add Zambezi The Zambezi River has many waterfalls including Victoria Falls Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake Major African waters
