  3. CW1. Brief • Find and immerse yourself in fieldwork setting: • 1 of 3 settings: museum/science centre, fast-food restaurant, the home • Produce a 4500 word report: 500 word executive summary, 2000 word account of the study, 2000 word requirements specification • 30% of overall mark (15% for study, 15% for requirements) • Describe the work activities observed in details of the actions of actors who are involved in the work of the setting • Pay specific attention to and analyse descriptions for: • 1. User tasks and sub-tasks • 2. The arrangements of cooperative work involved in task accomplishment • 3.   4. CW1. The 3 Systems • An interactive display for learning about the Solar System in a public museum/science centre • A system for ordering and paying for food in a fast-food restaurant • A system for sharing and using music in the home Andy Crabtree axc@cs.nott.ac.uk

  5. The Solar System • Go to a museum or science centre and look at how people interact with an interactive exhibit. Describe: 1. The different activities involved in using an interactive exhibit (task and sub-tasks) 2. How people collaborate in the use of the system (cooperative work) – observe not only what people do together at the interface, consider also how they come to use the exhibit: how they notice it, approach it, come to learn from others how to use it, and so on, consider the ‘career of the user’ as it were and how your design might facilitate this 3. Also consider the physical setting (ecology) and in what ways this ‘affords’ collaboration and interaction and whether or not this is relevant to your design Andy Crabtree axc@cs.nott.ac.uk

  6. The Fast-Food System • Go to a fast-food restaurant, any you like, and look at how people order food and pay for it. Describe: 1. The different activities involved in selecting something to eat and paying for it (task and sub-tasks) 2. How people collaborate in accomplishing those activities and thus come to select and pay for food - both between themselves and with restaurant staff (cooperative work) 3. The physical arrangements (ecology) of the restaurant that are used in selecting and paying for food and consider whether or not these are relevant to your design Andy Crabtree axc@cs.nott.ac.uk

  7. The Music System Go to the homes of family and/or friends and look at how they use and share music. Describe: 1. The activities involved in using and sharing music – e.g., how they get music, store it for use, distribute it, and listen to it, etc. (tasks and sub-tasks) 2. The collaboration involved between house mates, family members and friends in using and sharing music (cooperative work) 3. How the physical environment (ecology) is involved in using and sharing music – consider how music media and devices are distributed and used to distribute music and how the physical space affords sharing and use. Structure of the Report • 4500 word report addressing the following: • A short executive summary outlining what the report is about and its contents (500 words) • The ethnographic study (2000 words) • Approach taken • Settings studied and participants • Data gathered • Findings • Difficulties, limitations, next steps • The requirements specification (2000 words) • Brief high-level overview of the proposed system • Detailed functional and non-functional requirements specification Andy Crabtree axc@cs.nott.ac.uk

Group Work • The report is the product of the group(you might not write it but you will need to be able to account for contribution to it in CW3) • Use the work and requirements analysis tables to help identify content for the report: • Table 1. Project Summary (what, why, for who, how, benefits, limitations) • Table 2. User task (task and sub-tasks) • Table 3. Cooperative work (division of labour and arrangements of cooperation) • Table 4. Ecological or physical environment (diagram, photos, and description of use) • Table 5. Requirements (hardware, software, interface, network, operating environment/physical arrangement in use setting) • Report does not = filling in the tables: use them to identify those things that need to be in your report and add to appendix Andy Crabtree axc@cs.nott.ac.uk

Deadlines and Reporting • Thurs 12 Feb - initial check on coursework progress: so your studies should be well under way by then! • Doing the check: organize groups by study setting to make 3 super groups: each individual group has 5 minutes to report on their findings • Thurs 19 Feb - again 3 super groups but this time focus on translating studies to requirements; groups again have 5 minutes to report on their efforts • Wed 25 Feb 16.00 - submit coursework to School Office • Tues 3 March - 3 chosen as archetypes for design and evaluation (CW2) Andy Crabtree axc@cs.nott.ac.uk
