  1. Competent, Reliable, and Ethical Personnel What is it? How does it help? Examples! By: Shayne, Evan and David

  2. Introduction The purpose of this presentation is to provide you with an understanding about what it means to be a competent, reliable, and ethical employee, as well as the benefits provided by such employees for a company. These traits of employees are that which benefits Internal Control (I.C) by helping companies run smoothly and problem free as a direct result of their employees!

  3. Competent Personnel • What Does This Mean? • A competent employee is one who has suitable or sufficient skill, knowledge, experience, or qualifications for a specific job. • This means that they can perform their outlined tasks properly and effectively.

  4. Competent Employees Succeed!

  5. Why Does It Help? • Having competent employees ensures that the employees know how to perform and handle their assigned jobs efficiently, productively and compliantly. This warrants that a positive work environment and staff is maintained.

  6. Example! • Microsoft established a 5 minute challenge that all employee applicants must pass in order to get the job during the interview stage. It is as follows. • The U2 Challenge LATER • Bono: - 1 minute to cross • Edge: - 2 minutes to cross • Adam: - 5 minutes to cross • Larry: - 10 minutes to cross

  7. Effectiveness • This challenge allows Microsoft to find the perfect applicants who can think outside the box, work under pressure and maintain a creative mind while performing their required tasks. • Competency tests like this allow companies to weed out the incompetent employees and find those who are the perfect fit.

  8. Reliable Personnel • A reliable employee is one who is dependable, trust worthy, and honest. These employees help maintain a tranquil and peaceful workplace.

  9. Why does it help? • Having reliable employees establishes and maintains good relationships between other employees, and this allows companies to run smoothly. • This also establishes a level of trust between employees and their management, which can ensure that things like confidential info is kept secret, and high priority tasks are to be completed on time.

  10. Example! • At various companies, like Mercedes-Benz or Purdue Pharma, employees are required to keep confidential information private and undisclosed. • This enables organizations to retain a competitive advantage over other similar companies, and ensures that their core competencies are not compromised.

  11. Ethical Personnel • Ethical personnel are those employees who possess a strong understanding of right and wrong, hold good moral values, and have a good understanding of societies idea of acceptable practices.

  12. Why does it help? • Ethical personnel not only helps maintain a peaceful and friendly work environment, but it also allows companies to maintain positive global images as a direct result of their quality employees. • Employees who continue to act in an ethical manner put the company in a good global media light, and this will attract positive attention and additional business for the company.

  13. Example! • Durham Regional Police Service has a large population of members who are trained in matters of right and wrong in the eyes of the law, but are also recruited based on their ethics and morals as discovered during the interview stage of recruitment. • These employees undergo psychological testing, background checks and intense interviews in order to understand more about their morals, ethics and personal backgrounds.

  15. U2 Challenge! Now we want you to do the U2 Microsoft challenge! Here’s how it works. U2 has a concert that starts in 17 minutes and they must all cross a bridge to get there. All four men begin on the same side of the bridge. You must help them across to the other side in under or at 17 minutes. It is night. There is one flashlight. A maximum of two people can cross at one time. Any party who crosses, either 1 or 2 people, must have the flashlight with them. The flashlight must be walked back and forth, it cannot be thrown, etc. Each band member walks at a different speed. A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower man’s pace.

  16. Answer! Bono: 1 minute to cross Edge: 2 minutes to cross Adam: 5 minutes to cross Larry: 10 minutes to cross What order do they cross in?!

  17. The Answer Bono(1) and Edge(2) cross = 2 Bono(1) returns = 1 Adam(5) and Larry(10) cross = 10 Edge(2) returns = 2 Bono(1) and Edge(2) cross = 2 total = 17 The purpose of this activity is to test possible employees mental ability and quick thinking.

  18. Conclusion The combination of competency, reliability and ethics are the perfect blend of that which makes a quality employee and benefits a company the most. Selecting competent, reliable and ethical employees makes I.C easier to establish, as all companies are only as good as the people who run it – their employees.
