  4. Started with collaborators at my own department and colleagues in the same area • Got involved in large proposals/projects as an assistant professor, but did not find it particularly rewarding • Built a geographically diverse and distributed network of collaborators • improved technology for remote collaboration is very helpful (Skype conference calls with Europe and Canada for the last five years) My own experience (1)

  5. In the last 10 years, I have taken on numerous efforts outside my comfort zone • not all successful • found them overall rewarding and a great learning experience • besides research focused, education oriented, interdisciplinary projects, center proposals • Collaborations also arise from professional service • NSF panels • program committee meetings • serving on advisory boards and external reviews My Own experience (2)

  6. Funding opportunities • Examples of efforts: STC, ERC, MURI • Collaborations can emerge even if proposal is not funded • Center/institute creation opportunities • at your own or across different institutions • Involvement in professional organizations • Organizing events like workshops that allow you to build a community Towards larger scale COLLABORATIONs

  7. Personalities can become a challenge • Make sure you can work with the people involved • Set expectations and responsibilities for all • Get administrative help • Be prepared to let people know that they have failed to deliver • Be prepared to make final decisions not everyone is happy with • Limit the time and effort you put into it • Empower people who can help you and delegate work and responsibilities Management Issues will emerge
