  3. Stanley Yelnats • is a kid with a lot of bad luck. • is convicted of a crime he did not commit and is sent to the Camp Green Lake. • he becomes physically stronger and more self-confident at the camp. • He befriends Zero

  4. Zero • Stanley’s friend at the camp. • the best digger and generally thought to be stupid by the counselors and the other boys. • very smart, although he has never been taught how to read. • the great-great-great-grandson of Madame Zeroni, the woman who put a curse on Stanley's family.

  5. X-Ray • the leader of the group of boys at Camp Green Lake. • small and cannot see well, but he manages to take charge and have the other boys follow his orders. • nice to Stanley when Stanley gives him the gold tube that he finds in the dirt.

  6. Warden • the ultimate symbol of cruel authority at Camp Green Lake. • She has hidden cameras that she uses to spy on the boys • making the boys dig holes in an attempt to dig up Kate Barlow's treasure.

  7. Kate Barlow • the schoolteacher-turned-outlaw who robbed Stanley's great- grandfather. • lived on Green Lake one hundred and ten years ago • Sam turns Kate into a violent outlaw who lives on the wrong side of the law.

  8. Sam • were in love with Kate one hundred and ten years ago. • An onion seller • was black, he suffered from racism, which prevented him from attending school or being with Kate. • is killed by the racist people of Green Lake after he and Kate kiss.

  9. Madame Zeroni • Is the great-great-great-grandmother of Hector Zeroni. • She gave Stanley's great-great-grandfather a pig but when he broke his promise of carrying her to the top of a mountain she might have put a curse on his family.

Others Characters • Mr. Yelnats • is Stanley's father. • is an inventor who is smart and persistent, but unlucky. • discovers a cure to foot odor and is able to hire the lawyer, Ms. Morengo to get Stanley out of Camp Green Lake. • ElyaYelnats • is Stanley's great-great-grandfather • After becoming disillusioned with the woman he thought he loved in Latvia, Elya travels to America, forgetting to fulfill a promise that he made to the gypsy, Madame Zeroni. • passes down generations of bad luck to his family.

  11. Summary Stanley Yelnats, a boy who has bad luck due to a curse placed on his great- great-grandfather, is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention camp, for a crime he did not commit. Stanley Yelnats was given a choice. The judge said, "You may go to jail, or you may go to Camp Green Lake." Stanley was from a poor family. He had never been to camp before. But Stanley is not going where he thinks he is. Stanley and the other boys at the camp are forced to dig large holes in the dirt every day. Stanley eventually realizes that they are digging these holes because the Warden is searching for something, then Stanley begins his own search—for the truth.

  12. Themes • Exploitation of poor people Stanley was from poor family. He had never been to camp before. At the Camp Green Lake, The boys were digging holes because the treacherous warden used them to search something for her. Those boys were innocence so that they think it was their punishment.

  13. 2. Displaced people Stanley was accused of stealing a pair of shoes donated by a famous basketball player. In court, the judge doesn't believe Stanley's claim that the shoes fell from the sky onto his head. So, is sent to Camp Green Lake for a crime he did not commit.

  14. 3. Importance of family and home Stanley's father finally succeeds in inventing something: a cure for foot odor in order to be able to hire the lawyer, Ms. Morengo, to get Stanley out of Camp Green Lake.
