Extension Activity: Understanding Word Parts and Navigating a Dictionary • Using a dictionary, find and list one word for each of the four roots. • IMPORTANT: As you’re choosing, think about how words using these roots blend together and what common idea you can come up with (HINT: Think about the background of these instructional slides if you need inspiration). • Include the word’s definition and an explanation of how the root’s meaning plays a role in the word’s definition.

Extension Activity: Understanding Word Parts Place in Connotation • Revisit your list of words and their explanations of each root’s place in their definitions and addan image corresponding to each word you chose that conveys either a positive or negative connotation. • You can either draw or use the Internet to search, but you must use class-appropriateimages. Make sure whatever final product method you choose comes out clearly to me. • Label which connotation you see in it.

Extension Activity: Context Clues Communicate Meaning in Writing • Choosefour words that use the roots (one for each root) and write a one-page letter on a topic relating to incarceration. • For example, you could pretend to be in jail and write to a family member, you could write to an inmate you somehow know well, or you could write to someone who has been wrongfully imprisoned; the choice of topic is yours as long as it follows the general idea listed here. • Incorporate four separate context clue sentences as you convey your purpose to a person of your choosing. • Underline the word you use and context clues you use in your letter. You still need to finish with PURPOSE, so decide what that will be and how you will communicate it early on.
