  1. THE EPISTLE OF JUDE Pt.1: "Called! Sanctified! Preserved!Text: Jude 1-2Scripture Reading: II Pet. 1:10-11

  2. Intro • In several passages throughout the NT, we find serious • warnings about impending apostasy: • Jesus warned that false prophets would arise, the love of many would grow cold, and only those who endure to the end would be saved – Mt. 24:11-13 • Paul foretold of many disciples being drawn away – Acts 20:29-30; I Tim. 4:13 • Peter warned about the rise of false teachers, and how many would follow their destructive ways – II Pet. 2:1-3 • By the time the epistles of John and Jude were written, • the danger was no longer impending, it existed: • Antichrists and false prophets were in the world – I Jn. 2:18; 4:1; II Jn. 7 • Jude was forced to change his original purpose to deal with the crisis – Jude 3-4 If the danger of apostasy was already present in the 1st Century A.D…. That makes the Epistle of Jude especially relevant today! THE EPISTLE OF JUDE Pt.1: "Called! Sanctified! Preserved!

  3. Intro Jude 1-2 (NKJ) 1. Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ: 2. Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. • He identifies himself… • As “a servant of Jesus Christ” and “brother of James” • James the brother of the Lord – Mt. 13:55; Acts 15:13; Gal. 1:16-19; 2:9 • Jude was also a brother to the Lord Jesus – Mt. 13:55; Acts 1:14 • He then addresses his original readers… • No particular church or individuals are named • They are simply “those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ…” (NKJ) Jude identifies “saints” (V.3) as: “called,” “sanctified” (NAS: “beloved”), & “preserved” We will focus on the concepts of the three words of address: “Called! Sanctified! Preserved!” THE EPISTLE OF JUDE Pt.1: "Called! Sanctified! Preserved!

  4. THOSE WHO ARE “CALLED” • Those in Christ have been “Called” (G2822 kletos: • “divinely selected and appointed”) • This calling was not according to our meritorious works (Eph. 2:8-9). • It was according to God's own purpose and grace before time began (Eph. 1:4; 2:10). • I Pet. 2:9; II Pet. 1:3-4: Saints are called “out of darkness” & from corruption of the world. II Tim. 1:9 9. who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, • This “Call” came through the Gospel • Not by direct working of Holy Spirit, but by the gospel • Called through the means of the gospel – II Thess. 2:13-14 • The call is made available to all people of every nation – Mk. 16:15-16 • God's desire is that “all men be saved” – I Tim. 2:3-4 • God's offer is of His Son as “a ransom for all” – I Tim. 2:5-6 • God’s will is for “all should come to repentance” (II Pet. 3:9) THE EPISTLE OF JUDE Pt.1: "Called! Sanctified! Preserved!

  5. THOSE WHO ARE “CALLED” II Pet. 1:10-11 (KJV) 9. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: • After accepting the “Call” we are to make our “Calling and • Election sure” • This requires much diligence on our part – II Pet. 1:10-11 (vss. 5-10) • Otherwise, we will be like the Israelites in the wilderness – Heb. 3:12-19; 4:1-2, 11 It is the need for faithful diligence that explains the many warnings against apostasy found in the Scriptures – It also helps to understand why Jude felt it necessary to write his epistle! THE EPISTLE OF JUDE Pt.1: "Called! Sanctified! Preserved!

  6. “SANCTIFIED” BY GOD THE FATHER • ASV, ESV, NASB: “Beloved in God the Father” • “Beloved” = G25 “agapaō” [ag-ap-ah'-o]: to love (“to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, to love dearly” – Thayer) • Jesus said those who love Him will keep his commandments (Jn. 14:15) and those who keep His commandments abide in Him and God abides in him (I Jn. 3:24), thus to be loved by God one must set themselves apart unto God (to do His will – Mt. 7:21; I Jn. 2:5; 3:1). • Jude 3:The “beloved” are to “contend earnestly for the faith.” • Jude 17: The “beloved” are to remember the words of Jesus through the apostles. • Jude 20: The “beloved” are to build themselves up in their faith. I Jn. 2:5 5. but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: I Jn. 3:1 1. See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. THE EPISTLE OF JUDE Pt.1: "Called! Sanctified! Preserved!

  7. “SANCTIFIED” BY GOD THE FATHER • “Sanctify,” “Sanctification” (KJV; NKJ) • G37 “hagiazo” [hag-ee-ad'-zo]: to make holy, to set apart for a special purpose. • God has set apart those who have been called – Jude 1 (Loves those who do His will – I Jn. 2:5; 3:1) • The process of Sanctification: • Is said to be the work of the Holy Spirit: • “Sanctified by the Holy Spirit” – Rom. 15:16 • “Sanctified...in the Spirit of our God” – I Cor. 6:11 • “Sanctification by the Spirit” – II Thess. 2:13 • “The sanctifying work of the Spirit” – I Pet. 1:2 • Is also said to be the work of the Word of God: • “Sanctify them in the truth. Your word is truth.” – Jn. 17:17 • “That He might sanctify...with the word” – Eph. 5:26 THE EPISTLE OF JUDE Pt.1: "Called! Sanctified! Preserved!

  8. “SANCTIFIED” BY GOD THE FATHER Since the Word of God is said to be the “sword of the Spirit” (Eph. 6:17), the Word is evidently the instrument used by the Spirit to help bring about our sanctification • Paul prayed for the Thessalonians, “may the • God of peace Himself sanctify you completely” • (I Thess. 5:23) • Sanctification is an on-going process. • It begins at conversion, and continues as we grow in the faith. Whether we are “loved by God” or “sanctified by God” is determined by whether or not we remain faithful to Christ! THE EPISTLE OF JUDE Pt.1: "Called! Sanctified! Preserved!

  9. “PRESERVED” IN JESUS CHRIST • “Preserved” (NAS: “Kept”) • G5083 “tereo” [tay-reh'-o]: “to guard (from loss or injury).” From Thayer; • to attend to carefully, take care of • to guard • metaphorically to keep, one in the state in which he is • to reserve: to undergo something • It is used to describe that which is closely watched and guarded • Such as those disobedient angels who are awaiting the Judgment Day – Jude 6 (“kept”) • Such as the punishment awaiting “ungodly men” – Jude 13 (“reserved”) • Saints have a wonderful assurance in Christ • Peter uses a different word (G5432 phroureo [froo-reh'-o]) to express a similar idea – I Pet. 1:5 (“protected”) • Paul used yet another word (G4982 sozo [sode'-zo]) to express his own confidence in God's preservation – II Tim. 4:18 (“safely”) • Jesus reassured His disciples that no one could “snatch” them out of His hand – Jn. 10:27-29 THE EPISTLE OF JUDE Pt.1: "Called! Sanctified! Preserved!

  10. “PRESERVED” IN JESUS CHRIST • Some teach Calvin’s “once saved, always saved” from this • passage • Does this word (“preserved,” “kept”) mean that it is impossible to fall away? • Do we have no personal responsibility to remain “preserved in Jesus Christ?” • There is some personal responsibility! • Jude uses the same word for “kept” (NKJ: “preserved”) in Jude 21: “keep yourselves in the love of God…” (Jn. 15:9-10: Saints must “abide” in God’s love through obedience!) • I Pet. 1:5: “protected by the power of God through faith” • Jesus' teaching on security is for those who are “believers” (Jn. 10:27-29) • “Believers” can become “unbelievers”, and thereby in danger of losing one's salvation, is clearly taught in Heb. 3:12-19; 4:1-2, 11 Remaining “preserved” involves personal responsibility – It requires that we “keep ourselves” in the love of God! THE EPISTLE OF JUDE Pt.1: "Called! Sanctified! Preserved!

  11. Conclusion • We who are in Christ are indeed richly blessed: • We have been “called” by the gospel of Christ, to which call we responded when we obeyed the conditions of the gospel (faith, repentance, confession, and baptism)! • We have been “sanctified” or set apart for a holy purpose by God, as He works upon us through His Holy Spirit in conjunction with His Holy Word (we abide in His love)! • On the basis of our faith, we are “preserved” in Jesus Christ unto eternal life! In obeying the gospel, we are called, sanctified (beloved) by God, and preserved by Jesus Christ! THE EPISTLE OF JUDE Pt.1: "Called! Sanctified! Preserved!

  12. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child of God: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
