  1. Can a multi-modal approach improve the outcome for a disaffected S4 standard Grade Chemistry Class? Helen A Celnik Teacher Action Research Scholar 07-08 Kincorth Academy Presentation at STNE Seminar Perspectives on Learning 18 March 2008 at University of Aberdeen

  2. The Problem • My pupils often complain that they find Standard Grade Chemistry “hard”. • When they find a concept difficult to grasp they tend to disengage, and fail to persevere. • Pupils who perceive themselves as “not good at Chemistry” may fail to achieve their potential and predicted grades. www.brainybetty.com

  4. Pupil Comments • “I liked using the juggling balls to represent electrons” • “While we were learning the topic it was easier for me because we done (sic) more physical activities” a kinaesthetic learner • The songs and poems help us learn because it’s fun & we can remember the words. REM: Losing my electrons! • I found this topic very fun as we got to do more activities but I didn’t like Mrs Celnik’s poem (ah well, can’t please all of the people all of the time…) www.brainybetty.com

  5. Topic 12 Results • Pupils surprised themselves with the extent of their knowledge when we made a mind map during the revision session • Pupils who have consistently scored grade 7 gained general level grades in the end of topic test www.brainybetty.com

  6. Poem! Sing a song of twopence, electroplating’s great Put them at the negative electrode to plate We can electroplate coins to cover them in nickel But do not try to spend them or you’ll end up in a pickle! www.brainybetty.com
