  4. Best Dermatologist What is the care for follow-up? Skin biopsy is a straightforward procedure that is carried out under local anesthesia by your dermatologist to diagnose and treat skin cancer as well as noncancerous and precancerous growths. A skin biopsy can be carried out in a number of different ways. Shave biopsy: A surgical blade is used to cut a superficial slice of the growth, either of a portion or of the growth as a whole. This biopsy method typically does not necessitate stitching, and the wound heals on its own within one to three weeks, leaving only a small scar. The shape of the scar will be the same as the shape of the skin biopsy if the shave biopsy penetrates deeper into the skin. Blast biopsy: A small, cylinder-shaped instrument is used to cut the growth in half or all at once. Typically, the wound that results is stitched side by side. A more extensive sampling of the growth is possible with the punch biopsy method. The resulting scar is linear since the wound is typically stitched. Surgical biopsy: The growth is completely removed with a surgical blade. Typically, the wound that results is stitched side by side. The resulting scar is linear, just like with the punch biopsy. Depending on the location of the treated area, no dissolvable stitches will be removed within one to two weeks of the biopsy. Shave removal is similar to shave biopsy, but the goal is to remove a noncancerous growth for cosmetic purposes at the right depth so that the wound heals flat. A surgical blade is used to cut a thin slice of the entire growth during shave removal. Depending on the location of the treated area, there is no need to stitch the wound, and it heals on its own in one to three weeks. Most of the time, the wound is only superficial, so the scar is barely noticeable. The resulting scar will have the same shape as the shaved-off area if the procedure is carried out deeper into the skin.
