  1. to save our planet Little Things We Can Do

  2. That would save 500 pounds of carbon dioxide per year But the average American is responsible for breathing out 40,000 pounds per year… so that wouldn’t help much You Could Stop Breathing!

  3. So what can we do?

  4. Let There Be Light! • Turn offthe lights when you leave a room. • Make sure the lights you turn off (and on) are compact fluorescent. • Open your shades! Sunlight doesn’t pollute and it’s better for you than light bulbs (pure vitamin D!) Doing this would decrease 2000 pounds of carbon dioxide per year!

  5. Three Cheers for Saving Energy! • Turn off electronics and unplug them when you are through using them. …hungry electronics keep using electricity all night long, did you know? • Use a power strip to help you • Just turning off your computer at night can prevent 1000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions every year

  6. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle #1 • Use rechargeable batteries. • Use a solar charger for your batteries and for your ipod and cell phone. • When they expire, recycle your batteries. Batteries are the #1 source of dangerous heavy metals in landfills.

  7. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle #2 • Buy recycled paper (100% post-consumer waste). • Print on both sides of paper. • Better yet: e-mail it, bookmark it, save it, but don’t print it! • When it IS finally used up, recycle your paper. …If everyone at school used ONLY recycled paper it would stop over 50,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.

  8. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle #3 • Take only the food you know you will eat. • Try a vegetarian choice a couple times a week. • Drink from reusable containers: glasses… mugs…Nalgene bottles …At least 40% of global warming is directly related to agriculture.

  9. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle #4 • Recycle bottles & cans in the bins around campus • Recycle your cardboard pizza boxes(there is a cardboard dumpster behind the dining hall) • Order take-out food less often …Be a friend and remind your friends to recycle their stuff, too!

  10. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle #5 • Wash only full loads of laundry • Line dry your clothes • Wash in cold water when you can • Take shorter showers These watery solutions stop another 1000 pounds of carbon dioxide! …Hey, that’s twice what you save by not breathing!

  11. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle #6 • Turn down thermostats at night • Cold?—wear a sweater (or two!) • Close windows and doors (open them up in the summer for a breeze) You save 1000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per year for every degree you move your thermostat.

  12. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle #6 • Buy used when you can (books, clothes, gifts, cars…) • Donate or sell clothes you no longer wear • Buy clothes made from organic cotton • Go shopping with your friends at thrift stores …this is how fashion trends get started: so start one!

  13. Travel Lightly • Walk • Carpool • Ride your bike • Take a bus or train • Skip a trip home—check out a fun activity on campus …Help Mr. Stiles plan a fun activity on campus—your friends will drive less too.

  14. Green Car Smarts • Never idle your car. • If you are stopped for more than 10 seconds, it saves gas to turn off the engine. That’s right, 10 seconds!!! This has been true since they stopped making carburetors.

  15. Cars have been carburetor-free since 1990. No need to ever IDLE your car!

  16. Consume Lightly • Buy locally produced goods • Shop at farmers’ markets • Buy non-toxic cleaning products

  17. So what else can we do?

  18. Join New Hampton School’sHusky Green Council • Find a green Senior Leadership Project • Ask questions—get educated • Answer questions—educate your peers(or your teachers)

  19. Husky Green Councilprojects we’ve thought of… • Calculate our carbon footprint and figure out the best ways to reduce it • Expand our recycling program ∞ Coordinate the end-of-the- year clean-up

  20. Join in.Husky Green Councilmeets weekly. • LUNCHTIME: • THIS FRIDAY + NEXT FRIDAY in Memorial Hall Classroom • After break: • MONDAY LUNCHTIME

  21. Breathe in this beautiful life. It’s the “little things” that count.
